Celebrated but unconventional musical, based on Christopher Isherwood’s reminiscences of Berlin c. 1931, with both the decadent night-life and the growing N**i menace seen through the relationship between a young British visitor and the vivacious singer, Sally Bowles.

Truffaut’s second feature is a freewheeling New Wave take on American film noir, featuring tragedy, comedy and several digressions, all centred around the stony-faced Aznavour as a former concert-pianist in straitened circumstances.

With documentary-like precision, we follow a Tokyo toilet attendant as he undertakes his own precise, repetitive daily routine with evident joy and application. But the equilibrium of this ordered life is disturbed when a figure from the past appears.
