Monday August 17th - a special night for the Club. It was PDG Chris Boyes to invite a speaker and his 'guest' was Diane Hawkins JP LLB His Majesty's Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester. Almost 40 people joined President Ian Allan in welcoming Diane. Her talk included details of her early life, being brought up in Sale and Hale and how she was first appointed a Deputy Lieutenant almost 20 years ago. Now four years into her role as Lord Lieutenant in addition to describing the Lieutenancy's overall role- including its involvement with the King's Award for Voluntary Service and the King's Award for Enterprise- she spoke in particular about her personal experiences since 2022. These included having to return from a holiday two months after taking office due to the death of Queen Elizabeth, attending the Queen's Funeral, and subsequently attending the Coronation. The role includes being the first person to greet a member of the Royal Family when they visit Greater Manchester and also being the person who bids them farewell. Everyone really enjoyed the whole evening including having the opportunity for a Q&A with Diane. The photos include single shots of Diane the Lord Lieutenant and of Ian Allan the President.

This week Altrincham Rotary saw both a new member join us and also the once a year visit of the new District Governor. The District comprises more than 50 Clubs around Greater Manchester with a total of well over 1000 members. Our new member, Margaret Jones, sees our female membership rise by 50% . Margaret had previously been a member of Rotary in Manchester's Inner City and continues to help out weekly at a foodbank there. The District Governor brought a challenge to the Club to achieve various objectives in the coming year. He also assured members that District was there to serve the Clubs and to provides assistance wherever and whenever it was needed. Parking at CAFT FEST

Several of our members enjoyed the experience of
marshalling cars into (almost straight) lines on June 20 and 21. Seeing excited faces and cautious parents looking forward to what CAFT does best . A fun day out for all the family .
This year, under a scorching sun Mike, Robert S., Trupti, Ravi, Jim, Ken, Bernie, and Paritosh put on theirbest smiling faces and encouraged the car and van drivers to, “Aim for that
person with sign on the pole, but don’t hit them! ”, or “Can you reverse park next to that one please”, or “A bit closer please”.

President's Evening Brings Fellowship, Entertainment and Celebration

Last Tuesday, members of the Rotary Club of Altrincham gathered at Altrincham Football Club for this year's President's Evening, a wonderful occasion celebrating friendship, fellowship and the spirit of Rotary.

President Stephen Woods welcomed members, friends and family to what proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Around 40 people attended, creating a warm and vibrant atmosphere as everyone came together to celebrate another successful year for the club.

The event was expertly organised by Mike Maudsley, whose hard work ensured everything ran smoothly. Mike was ably supported by Jim and Geoff, and their combined efforts helped make the evening such a memorable success.

The celebrations began with an excellent three-course meal, beautifully prepared and served by Adele and her team. The quality of the food and the attentive service received many compliments from guests and provided the perfect start to the evening.

Entertainment was provided by Tom Anderson from Liverpool, an accomplished singer and entertainer whose engaging performance had everyone singing along and enjoying the music. With a varied repertoire and an easy rapport with the audience, Tom created a lively atmosphere that kept guests entertained throughout the evening.

Adding a special touch to the entertainment, our own club member Bob joined Tom for part of the performance. Their collaboration was warmly received and highlighted the talent and camaraderie within our own Rotary family.

President's Evening is always one of the highlights of the Rotary calendar, offering members an opportunity to relax, enjoy each other's company and thank those who contribute so much to the life of the club. This year's event certainly lived up to that tradition.

A sincere thank you goes to everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a success. Special thanks are due to President Stephen Woods for his leadership, to Mike Maudsley, Jim and Geoff for organising the event, to Adele and her staff for the excellent hospitality, and to Tom Anderson and Bob for providing such memorable entertainment.

The Rotary Club of Altrincham continues to thrive through the enthusiasm, friendship and dedication of its members, and President's Evening was a fitting celebration of everything that makes our club so special.

International Rotary Visitor
On Tusday we were also honoured to host Mr Shankar G, Vice President of Axis Bank, India, who has enjoyed a distinguished banking career spanning nearly four decades. Mr Shankar is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Mulund Hill View, District 3141, and is also a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF).
Mr Shankar shared his experiences in Rotary and discussed opportunities for strengthening international cooperation between our clubs. He proposed several joint initiatives, including family exchange programmes and collaborative service projects, which were received with great interest by members.
A traditional Rotary flag exchange ceremony followed, symbolising friendship, goodwill, and the strengthening of ties between our clubs and districts.

On Tuesday last June 16th the Club welcomed guest speaker Mr Robin Graham, a member of the Rotary Club of Manchester and a Rotarian since 2008. Robin is also an Art of Living teacher and runs a not-for-profit wellbeing charity called Feelgood Communities.
Robin delivered an engaging and interactive presentation on the importance of laughter and its positive effects on health, wellbeing, and social connection. Members enthusiastically participated in a laughter session, which brought a great deal of energy and enjoyment to the meeting.
During his talk, Robin shared a number of fascinating facts about laughter. He spoke about Belachew Girma of Ethiopia, often referred to as the "King of Laughter", who became internationally known for laughing continuously for 3 hours and 6 minutes. He also discussed scientific research suggesting that rats exhibit laughter-like vocalisations and explained that laughter is believed to have evolved in humans thousands of years ago as a means of social bonding and communication.
Robin's presentation highlighted the physical, emotional, and social benefits of laughter, reminding us that humour and positivity can play an important role in maintaining good health and strengthening relationships.
Conclusion
The meeting was an excellent example of Rotary fellowship, international friendship, and personal development. Members enjoyed the opportunity to hear from an accomplished international Rotarian and to participate in a lively and informative session that left everyone smiling.
