“Wish You Were Here” – A Night of Nostalgia, Reflection, and Cinematic Craft

On Monday, 22 September 2025, the theme “Wish You Were Here” took centre stage at our weekly film-making gathering - and what a night it was. With four heartfelt entries, each capturing a unique sense of place, memory, and longing, the competition reminded us why storytelling through film remains one of the most powerful ways to connect across time and distance.

🥇 First Place: Rodger Ball – A Day Out Celebrating Steam
Rodger Ball’s winning entry transported us to a bygone era of locomotion and community spirit. With rich visuals and evocative sound design, A Day Out Celebrating Steam was more than a tribute to vintage steam engines. Rodger’s film captured the warmth of nostalgia with cinematic precision, earning him the top spot.

🥈 Second Place: Peter Trengove – Oradour-sur-Glane
Peter Trengove’s haunting and contemplative piece Oradour-sur-Glane offered a stark contrast, inviting viewers into the silence of a place marked by tragedy. His film was a poignant meditation on memory, resilience, and the echoes of history. With restrained elegance, Peter reminded us that “Wish You Were Here” can carry both sorrow and reverence.
