Cardiac Health

Cardiac Health At Cardiac Health we believe that stronger, healthier lives are built together through exercise and community.

We help people in North East Hampshire achieve fitness for life. Basingstoke & Alton Cardiac Rehabilitation Charity, Registered charity 1013238 ("Cardiac Rehab") helps residents of north, east and mid Hampshire (and the surrounding areas) to recover and then maintain their health and fitness after heart attacks and heart operations. Our services revolve around a gym in which are run exercise sessi

ons for the purpose of cardiac rehabilitation, exclusively for people referred in from hospitals, GPs and other health professionals. As specialists in our field we provide an exercise environment that is safe, secure, unintimidating and friendly. We provide:

- Facilities for an NHS clinical team to run Phase III cardiac rehabilitation courses for patients discharged from the North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke (and from other hospitals on request). The hospital also runs a Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic from our site.
- Our own Phase IV cardiac rehabilitation "continuing exercise" sessions, open to anyone referred to us by a health professional. Clients travel to us from within an approximate 20 mile radius, including from Basingstoke, Winchester, Farnham, Petersfield and Fleet, and often exercise regularly with us for years. We run over 40 hours of classes per week and have over 20,000 client attendances per year. These exercise sessions are also attended by people on our Staywell Scheme for the primary prevention of heart disease. All of our exercise instructors are qualified to standards set by the British Association for Cardiac Prevention & Rehabilitation (BACPR Phase IV) and all staff at the Centre are trained in cardiac resuscitation techniques. It costs over £350,000 each year to run and support the Cardiac Rehab Centre. To help meet these costs we must raise over £250,000 each year through donations, fundraising events and similar. At the Centre we have meeting rooms available for hire. For more information click the link below;

Movement is medicine 🎗️

Our cardiac rehab programmes support men to recover, rebuild, and feel like themselves again. You don’t have to be fit to start—you just have to start, like John, a retired teacher who developed an ectopic heartbeat.

When exercise was offered as an alternative to medication John turned to Cardiac Health:

‘Within three to four sessions I started feeling healthier,’ said John. ‘I quickly built up a routine of coming twice a week at 8am, and it was remarkable the difference the structured and supported programme made to my fitness.’

Is hospital admission always the best choice for the frail and elderly?

In his latest blog Dr Bethell gives some insight into the conditions which need urgent hospital care and the ways those who have been hospitalised can be supported to regain their strength, health and mobility after an inpatient stay.

Rosie Lewis, one of our wonderful trustees is taking on the 'Chace the Sun' challenge on Saturday 21 June to raise funds for Cardiac Health as part of our 50th Anniversary year.

Rosie has just one day to Cycle 200 miles from the beach at Whitley Bay at the first ray of sunrise, to the esplanade at Ayr to witness the (hopefully glorious) sunsetting into the sea.

I'm sure you'll agree it's a HUGE undertaking as a solo rider and a great effort for a fantastic cause 😁

You can sponsor Rosie online: https://cardiachealth.org.uk/fundraising-event/chasing-the-golden-sun-a-50th-anniversary-ride/

This Men’s Health Week, we’re shining a light on the power of movement 💙
Glenn, a busy dentist and family man, was diagnosed with angina, which caused intense pain, dizziness and nausea. Once the hospital had his angina under control he was referred to Cardiac Health to exercise:

'I’ve never been keen on team sports or group exercise, definitely not going to the gym, but the expert supervision did make me feel more comfortable and I stuck with it. I’d never been as fit as I was when I did my first stint of rehabilitation.’

If you know someone, like Glenn who could benefit from an exercise programme, led by specialist instructors to rebuild their confidence and health through exercise visit our website: https://cardiachealth.org.uk/your-health/heart-health-journey/

We have an update on Martin's eyebrow shave at The Star Inn Bentley - he raised over £2,600 for Cardiac Health and lost two eyebrows and a beard in the process!

Martin told us afterwards "it's surprising how much people will pay to see someone make a fool of themselves - but I'm really happy we raised so much for Cardiac Health!' 😍

You can still sponsor the shave on Martin's online fundraising page: https://cardiachealth.org.uk/fundraising-event/sponsor-martins-eyebrow-shave/

Dr Bethell's latest Blog unpacks the recent ONS report on Healthy Life Expectancy. The predictions are grim for youngsters born in the UK today, with an average of 25-30 'unhealthy' years at the end of their lives.

What can we do to reverse the trend? Dr Bethell has an idea... https://cardiachealth.org.uk/healthy-life-expectancy/
