Ancient woodlands are some of the most diverse habitats, defined by centuries of continuous woodland cover. While maps can help with identifying the age of a woodland, looking at the ground flora at this time of year is also indicative.
Many woodland plants colonise areas very slowly, so a large area covered by a species such as bluebells is often an indicator that the woodland has been around for many years! Although most woodlands will have been replanted over time, the long established soils and plants will remain. Other plant species you may find in an ancient woodland are wild garlic, dogs mercury, primrose and wood anemone
