Our most recent field trip in August took us to Loxwood Joust where we were transported (with our digital cameras) back to medieval times where knights jousted, minstrels caroused and children generally monkey-ed about, even though the temperature was almost 30º.

Do you have an interest in photography? Would you like to improve your skills and share ideas with like-minded people?

Alton Camera Club commence their 80th season on Wednesday 2nd September and will be welcoming new members at any level, from interested beginner to enthusiastic professional.

Our weekly programme includes lectures from professionals, studio evenings, practical sessions and tutorials. To help improve your photography, members are offered the opportunity to enter friendly club competitions every month, where digital images and prints are assessed by qualified judges who score and provide constructive feedback to ensure that your photography is continually improving and gaining recognition. As a member of the Southern Counties Photographic Federation, we also enter images into regional SCPF competitions. We run a comprehensive field trip programme. Recent outings have taken us to Longstock Water Park, the New Forest Show and Columbia Road Flower Market and the Madonna del Carmine procession in London.

Members have had images exhibited at the Freedom Through Expression Gallery in Alton, The Horsebridge Arts Centre in Whitstable and the Photography Show at the NEC and our photographers have been recognised with awards from Amateur Photographer magazine and The Photographers Guild.

Earlier this week, members of Alton Camera Club took a trip to Brockenhurst for the New Forest Show. A fine array of farm animals, machinery, food stalls, displays and all manner of animal and human behaviour gave us plenty of interesting subjects to photograph, but was it ever warm! 🥵.

Last weekend, members of Alton Camera Club visited London for the annual 'Madonna del Carmine' procession in Clerkenwell. This event, organised by the Italian community, has been taking place since 1883. It commenced with the release of doves in front of St Peter's Italian Church and continued with statues of the Madonna, floral floats and participants dressed in traditional and biblical costumes parading through local streets. It culminated with delicious Italian goodies being served from food stalls nearby.

Prior to the procession, we stopped by Columbia Road Flower Market and walked from the East End, via Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, to Clerkenwell.

Camera club members recently visited Longstock Water Gardens in the Test Valley. It was a glorious day and we spotted an array of insects, butterflies, flora and fauna.

Our club members had a great day out at Marwell Zoo last week. Some of the animals were shy (the baby rhino and the camels were hiding) but we managed to spot new arrival, Gemma the sloth. Other highlights were the snow leopards, the tiger and the primates but the most excitement came from trying to stop the crows flying off with our snacks.

Our weekly meetings have finished for the 2025-2026 season but we resume again on Wednesday 2nd September for our new season. Meanwhile, we shall be continuing our field trip programme and look forward to visiting new locations and events in the finer weather (please).

Our 2025-26 season has now drawn to a close. It seems like no length of time ago that we welcomed ten brand-new, and over thirty returning, members through our doors at Holybourne Village Hall last September.

It's been a busy year of field trips, competitions, talks and practical evenings and our members achievements were celebrated at our annual Presentation Evening held recently at Alton Rugby Club.

Our most recent field trip took us to Greys Court NT in Oxfordshire where the bluebells were in fine display. We wandered and learnt a little of the history of the house before heading into Henley-on-Thames for a game of 'hunt the car park spaces'. On completion of this successful mission we treated ourselves to ice cream and a walk along the banks of the River Thames.

Our season has drawn to a close but our field trips continue throughout the summer. Our new season starts again in September. New members always welcome www.altoncameraclub.org.uk

Last week Alton Camera Club held their final competition of the year, the annual 'His n'Hers' challenge, which is always a closely-fought battle and this year was no exception! Judged by Geoff Young, both teams ended the evening with scores of 211.5. The winning team was decided on a 'count back' which deemed the ladies team as victors with three of their images scoring full marks of 10 as opposed to one image from the gents team.

Members of Alton Camera Club took a trip to London last week. We strolled along Portobello Road Market, climbed (well, took the lift) to the top of the iconic 1970's Trellick Tower and wandered alongside the Union/Regents Canal to Little Venice where some of us caught the boat, and some of us walked, to Camden Lock and Market. It was a sunny Spring day and, with around 19000 steps under our belt, it was a quiet train trip home.

We're now in the final couple of weeks of our 2025-26 season. Our new season starts at the beginning of September but we'll continue to get together for field trips throughout the summer.
