Alsager Institute… The Past, Present, and it’s Future!
Alsager Institute was gifted to the people of Alsager in 1974 when Alsager Urban District ceased to exist. In doing so the Institute became a charitable trust, with Alsager Town Council as the sole trustees. It has since then been a valued asset and in fact a hidden gem. It provides a facility where various organisations operate from in the evenings on a weekly and adhoc basis for a wide scope of the community both young and elder. These range from Women’s Institute monthly meetings, Military Whist club, Martial Arts and a Dance school that has delivered tuition from the Institute for over 30 years! It is also home to the majority of Town Council Committee Meetings. Over the summer months, the well-kept bowling green is well utilised by Alsager Bowling club, and Bowling clubs from the Alsager U3A. There is also a large snooker room located inside, where an established snooker club that always welcomes new members use the 2 large snooker tables provided. During the day the Institute has been leased to a day nursery for the past 10 years. They have offered the town a valuable service, and the Institute have been appreciative of their commitment to the building and the provision of a required service to the people of Alsager.
As a charitable trust the Institute is required to support itself financially. Unfortunately, over time the Institute has made financial losses. During this time Alsager Town Council has subsidised the losses via grant payments, however have had to consider options to reduce this occurring. In order to move towards being self-funded, the trustees instructed Town Council Officers to complete a comprehensive service review, and conditions survey then to act on the recommendations. Proposals put forward highlighted the necessity to maintain the building to a suitably good standard and to support itself financially, comparable with other similar facilities therefore amendments were indorsed to avoid any loss being paid by the tax payer.
It is now an exciting time for the Alsager Institute. Varied changes made this September will enable it to be able to advance and improve to offer a fantastic provision unique to Alsager. It has a new venture for Kidsgrove Care Solutions, who are branching out with their new project at the Institute during the day, since the previous day nursery hirer opted to disolve. Kidsgrove care solutions hope to involve their clients in the community, offer a distinctive facility and develop as a charitable scheme under the name of Cheshire Learning and Development Centre. The Town Council and Alsager Institute are optimistic about the project, and what it can offer, but also about the future of the Institute, that can now be utilised and advance to no longer being supported financially by Alsager tax payers.
