HELP NEEDED: We've been asked to identify this cockpit control panel which now forms part of a "Children's Dalek" which was built by Vickers Armstrong in the 1960s.
We suspect it's not from a multi-engined aircraft, with an FE, but hope that one of our followers might be able to help.

WO Norman Jackson VC

On the night of 26–27 April 1944, Norman Cyril Jackson earned the Victoria Cross for extraordinary gallantry during an RAF bombing raid on Schweinfurt, Germany. While serving as a flight engineer aboard an Avro Lancaster, he climbed out onto the wing of the aircraft in flight to tackle a fierce fire dangerously close to the fuel tank, saving the aircraft and much of its crew.

After reaching the wing, Jackson fought the flames with a hand fire extinguisher while the bomber flew at speed, despite being wounded and exposed to intense heat and the slipstream. During a further attack by a German night fighter, he was hit again and blown from the wing, falling thousands of feet before his damaged, burning parachute partially opened and saved his life. Badly injured on landing, he was later taken prisoner by German forces, but his actions had given his aircraft and surviving crew a chance to escape.

The National Memorial Arboretum has announced an important change as part of its long‑term integration with the Royal British Legion.

From September 2026, the site will become known as the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens.

This follows the decision earlier this year for the Arboretum and the RBL to operate as a single organisation under one Board of Trustees. The change streamlines governance and supports the RBL’s wider strategy to evolve Remembrance and broaden public participation.

For memorial holders, including the RAF Flight Engineer & Air Engineer Association, all existing agreements remain fully valid. Responsibilities for maintenance, upkeep and safety are unchanged, and all rights and obligations transfer directly to the Royal British Legion without interruption.

The RBL National Remembrance Gardens will continue to serve as the nation’s year‑round place of Remembrance, with more than 420 memorials — including our own — remaining central to its purpose.

Join Us for the 2026 Veterans’ March Past – All Air Engineers Welcome

As we prepare for this year’s Remembrance Sunday march past at the Cenotaph on 8 November 2026, we want to remind everyone that the Flight Engineer & Air Engineer Association contingent is open to all Air Engineers — not just FEAEA members.

If you served as a Flight Engineer or Air Engineer you are warmly invited to march with us. This year is especially significant as we mark the 85th Anniversary of the branch, and we would be proud to have as many of our community represented as possible.

If you’d like to take part, please message us and we’ll send you instructions on how to sign up.
