This week the Alnwick cadets focused on confidence with speaking in public and demonstrating first aid skills, as part of being First Aid Aware.

We started the evening with a quick session on locating medical information about an unresponsive patient, particularly how to access the medical info section on different mobile phones.

We then moved onto speaking in very small groups, with the cadets choosing from a wide range of first aid and non-first aid related topics. They had to think for a minute and then speak for a minute whilst stood in front of their group.

We then discussed barriers to speaking in front of larger groups of strangers and ways that we can overcome the most significant of those.

Finally, in groups of 3, the cadets had to prepare and deliver a 10 minute demonstration of a first aid skill/skills of their choice to the rest of the group. We were treated to singing, dancing and some excellent demonstrations of techniques that the cadets have learned over previous sessions 👏

This week the cadets did some consolidation work on communication, both within the first aid team, and when treating a patient.

We then revised the primary survey from last week and moved onto the secondary survey, focusing on questioning of responsive patients, and checking of unresponsive patients, in order to see if there is any treatment that can be given to preserve life prior to the arrival of the emergency services.

This week the Alnwick cadets revised the primary survey and basic life support, focusing on the decisions to be made at each stage. Getting an AED on scene, maintaining a patient's airway and, if necessary, performing CPR or controlling a severe bleed, can all make the difference in the vital minutes before the emergency services arrive.

Thanks to the excellent attitude of the cadets, their ability to perform this very important task is improving every week. We will frequently revisit the primary survey among the other skills that we practice to ensure that the cadets are ready and able to help, at events and in their communities.

A huge thank you to John and Lauren who came up again to help us.

This week the Alnwick cadets were shown around a St John Ambulance!

We started the evening being shown various bits of equipment from onboard, what they're for and how they work. The cadets were then allowed to get hands on with some of the kit, before we had a look around the inside of the ambulance.

This was a brief introduction, and later in the year the cadets will have the opportunity to take part in a 2 day Ambulance Awareness weekend where they will use more of the equipment in practice scenarios. This means that if they choose to become First Aiders they will have the necessary awareness to assist ambulance crews when required.

A huge thank you to John and Lauren, who drove all the way up from Durham and back for the evening to enable the cadets to have this experience.

This week the Alnwick cadets focused on Patient Communication.

Being able to talk to a casualty, ascertain what has happened and summon help is a key skill that requires confidence built over time and practice.

The cadets took part in scenarios to increase their confidence in talking to patients - how to introduce themselves and build rapport, and possible questions to ask.

We then concentrated on making 999 calls, particularly how to summon help as efficiently as possible - the information that a call handler is likely to ask for and determining location in an unfamiliar environment.

Due to an expanding number of cadets we need 1 or 2 additional adult helpers at the St John Ambulance Alnwick Cadet Group.

We meet once a week on a Monday 1900-2100 at St Michaels Church Parish Hall in Alnwick.

In addition to cadets learning first aid skills and attending events there is a comprehensive programme focusing on 26 life skills such as leadership and teamwork, lifestyle, communication and health.

No prior first aid experience is necessary, just a desire to educate and encourage the next generation. If this sounds like something you would enjoy and could help with please contact us either via DM or email [email protected] for more details.

As part of the Grand Prior Award "Event Cover" subject, this week the Alnwick cadets looked at the importance of effective communications, what methods we have for communicating with each other, and possible barriers to communicating with patients and how to overcome them.
They also learnt about basic radio procedure, callsigns, prowords and message passing, before practising using radios. They finished the session with an exercise involving the passing of situation reports (sitreps) between themselves.
A really great effort all round, especially considering some of the cadets had never used a radio before.

Having completed their initial 10 hour first aid course, this week the cadets moved onto their first Grand Prior Award subject - Celebrating Differences.

As part of St John Ambulance the cadets will encounter a diverse range of people, so this subject aims to equip them with the ability to treat people with the respect and empathy that we would all like to receive ourselves, regardless of who we are.

Starting with identifying their own uniqueness, the cadets then worked together to look at what makes us all different and how that is something to be celebrated, not something that should divide us.

For the second part of the evening we consolidated bandaging and slinging techniques before conducting a range of scenarios focusing on common medical issues - stroke, heart attack, seizure, angina and asthma.

As the cadets approach the end of the initial 10 hour first aid course, this week they started by revising their dressing and slinging skills and then learnt about the Electronic Patient Report Form (ePRF) that is required to be filled out following treatment of any kind. Completing an ePRF is likely to be one of the first duties they will conduct at events, as they become more familiar with the first aid role.

This week the cadets continued with their 10 hour first aid course. They looked at common medical conditions - what they affect, how to recognise them, how to provide first aid if possible and when to get help. They also learned how to conduct a top to toe survey of an unresponsive breathing casualty.
