Congratulations team
The Friends of Alnmouth Station (FAS) were delighted to receive a Gold award for their entry in the Bus, Metro and Railway Stations category at the Northumbria in Bloom awards announced today at The Fed in Gateshead. Pictured: FAS chair Katherine Challis (right) and FAS volunteer Jenny MacDowell (left) proudly holding the new award certificate.
The judge's comments: "The platforms at Alnmouth Station have a stunning display of planters filled with colourful annuals and perennials, others have a variety of well grown herbs and in the grass tubs new varieties are being trialled. The planters are much admired by travellers at the station. The station staff are very supportive and the gorgeous geranium filled baskets on the station buildings are cared for by the Friends, station staff and the contract cleaner. The eye catching big planters at the station entrance are much admired and the south bank is thriving with suitable flowers, shrubs and trees. Community events include fund raising at the May Day event, an Open Day and at the Lesbury Shop. Facebook posts receive many 'likes' and a new Friends page is being established. The friends group are a hardworking team."
FAS extend our congratulations to the other category winners: Weardale Railway, Stanhope Station (Gold and Best in Class) and Tanfield Railway (Silver Gilt).
The competition, now in its 61st year, is all about encouraging local communities to improve their area through community gardening and sound environmental practises. It is part of the UK wide Britain in Bloom campaign run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The Northumbria in Bloom region runs from Berwick in the north, south west to the border with Cumbria, then along the border with North Yorkshire to the sea south of the Tees at Staithes.
FAS is a small but dedicated group of volunteers who give up their free time to plan, design, create and maintain a range of floral displays at Alnmouth railway station. The work of FAS is dependent on local organisations and individuals who kindly provide financial support. New volunteers are always welcome.
