We've made the difficult decision to withdraw this opportunity. A change in the personal circumstances of one our staff team in the last week has meant that we have had to place our limited resources in another place to best support our programme over the next six months. With this change in circumstances, we have also identified a risk we would not be able to support the appointed person in the best way and to the standards we hold ourselves to.

We know how much freelance opportunities matter right now, and we're truly sorry to anyone who had already started working on an application. This wasn't a decision we took lightly. We remain fully committed to Novo Talent and to creating meaningful opportunities for freelancers across the North East.

We will continue to share opportunities via our mailing list, website, and social media as they arise. When appropriate, this will include other producing opportunities.

Thank you for your understanding.

Walk in Your Shoes was a post-pandemic idea to reconnect with audiences and the people and places of Northumberland.

Five years on and we're still walking and have covered 170 miles discovering Northumberland's stunning countryside.

We've walked with 123 amazing people along the way and are now planning our 2026 walk which will take place on Saturday 5th September.

We hope you will join us in September?
Where should we walk next?

For local history and community month we're looking back at some of our past projects and the stories we've told of Northumberland's people and places.

In 2023, Novo Theatre partnered with singer-songwriter Katie Doherty to create a brand new musical inspired by the 19th century Northumberland heroine and social reformer Josephine Butler.

Josey began life as a 20-minute audio musical - written by Katie Doherty, directed by Joe Hufton and commissioned by The Space Arts - with the ambition of developing the production into a full touring musical.

A series of workshops, with women of all ages across Northumberland to discuss womenโ€™s rights and activism today inspired the script. The digital musical also features a community choir of women from across Northumberland as well as voices from young women from local schools, Cramlington Learning Village and Dukeโ€™s Academy in Ashington.

In November 2025, Novo Theatre secured funding from the Garfield Weston Foundation, which will go towards delivering a community engagement programme and the stage production will be developed in partnership with Indignant Arts and Northern Stage (subject to funding outcomes later this year) ๐Ÿคž

We want to change perceptions of who can work in theatre.

We work with young people and schools in Northumberland to show that itโ€™s possible to pursue a career in theatre in our region.

Find out more about the programme and its impact in this short film featuring teachers and students from NCEA Duke's Secondary School and Morpeth First School.
