Rotary Club of Alloa

Based within the local community we meet on a regular basis to enjoy friendship, networking and to plan projects that will benefit the lives of others both home & abroad thanks to the skills, expertise and dedication of the members. To encourage & foster the idea of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage & foster:
1. The development of acquaintance as an opportuni

ty for service.
2. High ethical standards in business and professions: the recognition of worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his or her occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
3.The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his or her personal, business and community life.
4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional men & women united in the ideal of service.

💜Donation from Sauchie Helps to Change Lives Around the World 💜

Rotary Club of Alloa President Gordon Guthrie, accompanied by Rotarian John MacPherson, recently visited Sauchie Community Garden where they spent time meeting local residents, sharing stories and talking about the work Rotary carries out both here in Clackmannanshire and around the world.

Mia has very kindly donated £66 to support Rotary's End Polio Now campaign. We are incredibly grateful for her generosity and community spirit.

Many younger people today have never seen the effects of polio, but speak to your parents, grandparents or older neighbours and they will remember just how cruel this disease was. Across Scotland, including here in Clackmannanshire, families lived with the fear of children being paralysed, spending months in hospital, or facing lifelong disability as a result of polio.

More than 40 years ago, Rotary and its global partners took on the challenge of eradicating polio from the world. Through vaccination programmes, determination and the support of communities like ours, cases have fallen by more than 99.9%, making this one of the greatest public health achievements in history. We are now closer than ever to ensuring no child ever suffers from polio again.

Mia's donation will be used to purchase crocus bulbs as part of Rotary's Purple4Polio campaign. The purple crocus represents the purple dye placed on a child's finger after receiving a life-saving polio vaccination and serves as a reminder that, while we are close, the fight is not over yet.

A huge thank you to Mia and everyone at Sauchie Community Group for their warm welcome and support. It is amazing how a local act of kindness can contribute to a global effort that is changing lives.

Together, we can help finish the job.

What does a Rotarian actually do?

This week gives a pretty good answer.

✅ Supporting local community projects in Sauchie

✅ Helping young footballers at Craigbank School of Football with new team strips

✅ Spending a day helping nearly 800 children enjoy a fantastic Kids Out event organised by fellow Rotarians

Rotary isn't just meetings.

It's community projects.

It's supporting young people.

It's making connections.

It's getting stuck in and having a laugh while making a difference.

This week, President Gordon Guthrie and Rotarian John Scott joined fellow volunteers at the annual Kids Out event, helping create a memorable day for hundreds of children and families from across Forth Valley.

The weather behaved itself, the smiles were everywhere, and even Gordon's wife Irene was recruited into the Rotary volunteer team!

If you've ever wondered what Rotary is really about, it's days like this.

Friendship. Community. Service. Fun.

Would you enjoy being part of something like this?

🏆✨ A Night of Recognition, Fellowship… and Plenty of Smiles at Rotary Alloa ✨🏆

There’s something special about a Rotary Business Meeting when it’s filled not only with reports and planning — but genuine appreciation for the people who quietly make things happen behind the scenes.

At this week’s meeting, Rotary Club of Alloa President Gordon Guthrie took time to recognise two outstanding Rotarians whose dedication, enthusiasm and service continue to make a real difference to both the club and the wider community.

We were delighted to welcome Assistant Governor Brian Mitchell from the Rotary Club of West Fife, who came along to see what Rotary Alloa has been up to. Thankfully for Brian, he discovered exactly what we hope Rotary should be — enthusiastic, engaging, forward-thinking… and most importantly, fun! 😊

👏 Rotarian Alistair Spowage was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Rotary and the wider community. Alistair has been the driving force behind the hugely successful *Tour De Clacks* cycling event and has worked tirelessly to promote End Polio Now awareness throughout the community.

👏 Rotarian Fiona De Luca was awarded the prestigious Andrew Nicol Quaich — a special presidential recognition presented to a member who has made an outstanding contribution to the work of the club during the President’s year. Fiona’s passion for community service, positivity and hands-on support across club activities make her a thoroughly deserving recipient.

While both awards celebrate exceptional service, they each hold a different meaning within Rotary:

🔹 The *Paul Harris Fellowship* recognises significant service to Rotary and the wider community.

🔹 The *Andrew Nicol Quaich* is a personal award from the Club President recognising outstanding contribution to the club during their year in office.

Moments like these remind us that Rotary is powered by people — volunteers who give their time, energy, ideas and heart to help others.

And yes… there may also have been a few laughs, a bit of banter and the usual Alloa Rotary good humour along the way. Because as we keep saying:

💙 Let’s keep the “F” in Rotary — Fun, Fellowship, Fundraising and Forward Thinking.

If you’re someone who would like to give something back to the community, meet good people and be part of something positive and worthwhile, why not come along and see what Rotary Alloa is all about? We’re always happy to welcome new faces — so get in touch and check us out.

At our latest monthly Rotary Club of Alloa meeting, we were delighted to welcome Kenneth Ferguson as our guest speaker.

Rotary regularly welcomes speakers from across communities, charities, public services and business to share the inspiring work they are doing — and Kenneth certainly gave us plenty to think about.

Drawing on experience across academia, government, industry and the Third Sector, Kenneth spoke passionately about how charities, organisations and communities can work together to create greater impact through shared ideas, collaboration, time and resources. His insight into supporting grassroots charities and amplifying the voices of people experiencing rural poverty across Scotland was both inspiring and thought-provoking.

It was also fantastic to welcome visitors from Northallerton Rotary Club, along with a prospective new member to Rotary Alloa, making for a really enjoyable evening of fellowship, conversation and new connections.

And just to prove we were all still awake by the end of Kenneth’s excellent talk… here’s the group photo! 📸

If you’ve ever wondered what Rotary is all about, why not come along to a future meeting? We’d love to welcome you.

Keep an eye on our future posts for upcoming speakers and events, and let us know if you’d like to attend.

Loving our spectacular hikers! Hope you raised lots of money for the fine work you do in

So today… we did a thing.

We climbed hills, wore tutus, danced in the middle of nowhere, admired the views, laughed a lot, and spent time together as our Alloa Ballet Company family.

But behind all of that fun was something really important.

Today’s Nebit Hill Challenge was about helping support our biennial show, raising funds to help keep performance opportunities accessible for all of our dancers and keeping participation costs as low as possible for families.

What made today special wasn’t just reaching the top. It was seeing pupils, parents, teachers, siblings and friends all encouraging each other every step of the way.

A reminder that dance is about so much more than what happens in the studio.

Thank you to everyone who walked, donated, shared our page, supported from afar, or simply cheered us on.

Donations are still very welcome via our JustGiving page if you would still like to support our dancers.
