From Tsar to FIDE: The Birth of Grandmasters

Did you know? The famous story that Tsar Nicholas II officially awarded the first Grandmaster titles in 1914 is still debated by historians.

What we do know: The five finalists of the 1914 St. Petersburg tournament, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tarrasch, and Marshall, are often called the "Original Grandmasters."

In 1950, FIDE officially introduced the Grandmaster title, awarding it to 27 of the world's strongest players.

A title earned through excellence, brilliance, and dedication to the game.
