Today the family of John Renton MBE laid him to rest at a lovely service held in Dumfries.

John was the first ever General Secretary of the SPOA and served with great distinction from 1972, until 1989.
He was awarded an MBE in 1982 for his services to the trade union.

Despite having been retired for more than 30 years from the service, John was a regular attender to POA conferences throughout the whole of that time, until the last couple of years where his health did not allow it.

He was always genuinely interested in the conference agenda, and sat through hours of debate right until his last conference.

Our Assistant General Secretary Phil Fairlie, and Kathryn Fairlie attended the funeral on behalf of the The POA and to pay our collective respects to an absolute gentleman who holds a very dear place in the history of our trade union.
