Poulton Wood Nature Reserve

Poulton Wood Nature Reserve 28 acres of ancient woodland owned and operated by Canterbury Oast Trust as a Life Skills project. It achieved local nature reserve status in march 2001.

Poulton Wood truly is the most captivating atmospheric and healing place. 28 acres of ancient semi-natural hornbeam coppice with oak standards. It is owned and operated by Canterbury Oast Trust, a charity dedicated to the residential care and training of adults with learning disabilities, and is run as a Life Skills conservation project. It is cared for with love and imagination and over the past

30 years has been brought back under traditional coppice management both for the timber it yields and the diversity of habitat which occurs as a consequence. We are staffed on weekdays when we are available to take orders for commissions of house signs and bird boxes etc. We hold a superb annual woodland open day where you will see the working horses in action plus many demonstrations of coppice crafts and related woodland activities. There is also a bluebell cream tea held around 1 May when you will be able to enjoy scrumptious cream teas and guided woodland walks. The spring flowers are beyond compare. All who visit will fall in love as this woodland truly does have a spirit of its own which will captivate you forever.

Some of the rangers celebrated the midsummer weekend by camping out at Poulton Wood. A midnight pond dip delighted the campers with discoveries of ghostly dragonfly exuviae. We were amazed to actually see a dragonfly emerging from its nymph stage. Waterboatman sailed around in the moonlight and newts played under the water whilst owls and bats flew overhead.
One ranger said it was like getting to know a whole new woodland in the darkness, one very different to the one they know so well in the day. πŸΈπŸŒ™βœ¨οΈπŸ•

We had a fantastic time at the inaugural Sandgate Green Fair today, showcasing our range of hand made products. Lovely to see so many familiar faces and chat to fellow stallholders as well as making new connections.

Ben Hillman surpassed himself with his carving demonstration and showed several members of the public how to carve. Well done Ben, you've certainly come a long way!

Thanks to Lynn Cooke too for helping out and Sandgate Environmental Action for organising a hugely successful event.

Thank you so much to the corporate volunteer group from who generously gave up their time to help us today. Despite extremely challenging conditions (wind, driving rain and Henry's dreadful jokes) they did a truly fantastic job, shifting an enormous amount of timber to clear the coppice area in preparation for milling the stems we cut in the winter.
We really appreciate you all giving up your time to help us in managing our wonderful woodland. πŸ’šπŸŒ³πŸ’šπŸŒ³πŸ’šπŸŒ³
