Alderney Museum

Alderney Museum The Alderney Museum is the number one attraction in Alderney - see Tripadvisor Dendrochronology dates some of the ship's timbers to 1575.

The museum collection on display reveals an island community changing over the years to both external and internal pressures. Alderney has a fascinating history starting with extensive Stone, Bronze and Iron Age activity, with object evidence of historically important Roman activity at Longy. The Victorian era brought huge change to Alderney and the landscape it still dominated by Queen Victoria's

interest in the island as a defence harbour from the French. Most recently the Second World War had an extreme effect on Alderney when all but a few of the island's inhabitants were evacuated and the island occupied by German forces for the duration of the war. Alderney's evacuees spent the war years in Guernsey, Glasgow and various places the world over. The island landscape was changed dramatically as Hi**er used Alderney as part of his Atlantic Wall. The unnamed Elizabethan wreck, foundered on a shallow reef north-east of Braye Bay in the early 1590s. The Museum houses the ships' rudder and artefacts lifted from the wreck. Some of these are unique or very rare for the period, such as metal charge flasks (called 'Apostles') for measured charges of gunpowder. Also on display are two cannon which were found with their original gun-carriages, the latter a unique survival from the Elizabethan period. The museum has won prestigious awards since its opening in 1966, most notably the 1999 Gulbenkian award for "most outstanding achievement with limited resources". In 2001 the museum was registered by The Council for Museum, Libraries and Archives and in 2007 achieved full accreditation from the MLA.

Good Morning Alderney. It's quiz time. With half term happening next week we thought it was time to bring out the quizzes and activities for the children.

We have the 2026 quiz for the older children who will need to find and answer easy questions about some of the exhibits in the museum. There are laminated pictures of exhibits for the little ones to take and see if they can find the exhibit in the museum. Our thanks go to Beth Chapman for all her help in compiling the quiz.

In addition we have two word searches for all age groups to have a go at and an array of different colouring sheets and colouring pens.

With adult permission, there is a pick from the sweetie tub for all entrants to say thank you for taking part. We hope that this will keep everyone occupied during their visit to the museum.

Open 10-12 Monday to Sunday and 2.30 - 4.30 Monday to Friday. Please pay us a visit.

Good Morning Alderney. The volunteers at the watermill held a very successful afternoon with between 25 and 30 people attending to see the waterwheel in action. We thank them for coming and for the generous donations which are used to maintain the waterwheel for future generations to enjoy. The waterwheel will be in action during the summer, however, this is weather dependant and we will let you know the dates and times in due course. In the meantime, the museum is open between 10 and 12 every day and between 2.30 -4.30 Monday to Friday for your enjoyment. If you are looking for a gift or souvenir, you could also visit our shop between those hours without having to pay an entrance fee to the museum. Hope to see you soon.

Good Morning Alderney. This is an appeal for an additional volunteer if possible. We are delighted that we have so many volunteers who are willing to give up two hours of their time once a fortnight to help us maintain the opening hours of the museum. We are in need of an additional person to man the desk on a Wednesday afternoon between 2.30 and 4.30 once a fortnight, preferably starting on 6 May but that is not essential. It is not an onerous job and full training would be given. If you are interested or would like further information, please call Lesley on 823222 or email [email protected]

17/04/2026

Good Morning Alderney. This is just to let you know that volunteers are planning to run the waterwheel this Sunday at 2.30pm. Everyone is welcome. Why not enjoy your Sunday lunch and then come and visit. What a lovely way to spend the afternoon. We do hope to see you there. There is no entrance fee but any donations you wish to make would be very gratefully received.
