During the Christmas season, and all through the year, I have had the pleasure of seeing again and again the community spirit that thrives across our towns and villages. Every week we have hundreds of volunteers giving their time and energy to support others, through organising community events, markets and fairs, litter picks, and providing support to local residents through coffee mornings, toddler play groups, dementia carer support groups and more.

Chertsey and Addlestone Good Neighbours is one of the great examples of this, providing support for over 30 years. It is a delight to always see their volunteers at community events and hear of the support they provide – organising lifts to hospital for people who struggle to access transport, helping residents with shopping, collecting pensions, or just catching up over a coffee – having Good Neighbours is a lifeline to many people in the local area.

You can find out more about their work, including how to get in touch for help or to volunteer, please visit https://chertseyandaddlestonegoodneighbours.co.uk/
You can also email at [email protected] or call on 01932 565146.

Community support can be even more important this time of year, especially for those who do not have friends or family nearby.

Thank you to everyone who continues to give their time and resource to support others, helping to make communities across the Runnymede and Weybridge constituency such fantastic places to live.

It's been a busy few weeks participating in local fetes in each of the areas we cover: Chertsey, Addlestone, Ottershaw and Lyne. Thank you to our local MP Dr Ben Spencer for stopping by to show his support at each event.

JALSA SALANA UK 2024

Christine Leach and Brian Perry attended
“ Jalsa Salana UK 2024”, the Annual Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK on Sunday 28th July. This was thanks to the very kind VIP invitation from Fareed Ahmad, National Secretary External Affairs, via Ifti Chaudri, former Mayor of Runnymede.

This was the largest UK’s Muslim Convention attracting over 40,000 participants from 125 countries whose aim is to increase religious knowledge, and promote a sense of peace and brotherhood.

The Convention was held over 3 days at the 210 acre Oaklands Farm in the countryside of Alton in Hampshire. This site was turned into an event village with over 240 marquees; all serviced by over 7000 volunteers.

The key highlight of the Convention was the Pledge of Allegiance at the hand of the Caliph, His Holiness Hazrat Mirrza Masroor Ahmed, Head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community that took place at 1pm on the Sunday. During the Pledge the entire gathering is connected with the Caliph by a chain of hands on shoulders.

This was a great networking opportunity for the Good Neighbours.
