I'll be a hosting an autumn walk at Arden Hall this Sunday 18th October, 1pm-3pm. Come along to learn about wildlife you can spot in autumn, and about what we are doing to help it!

I'll be bringing litter-picking equipment as well.

Today's challenge for 3 members of the friends of 'faithful' was to capture the litter that lined the bottom end of Plantation road near Arden hall before ascending to the more prized challenge of a clearing the banks of the bottom lodges, traversing the connecting streams that feed Pleck brook to finish are litter picking bounty.
No prize money or shields from murder could be found. However we collected 8 full large bags, many gas canisters and saw a large array of mushrooms on the sheltered banks.
The biggest prize was a feeling of self worth removing the plastic and debris from the stream and banks (who can forget nature scenes with Attenborough showing creatures killed by this sort of stuff).
Alas no round table was needed as I think all litter pickers are the faithful! Thanks to my fellow litter pickers and Lee from Hyndburn Council who has already agreed to sort the collection of our mainly purple bags.

This area just off of Plantation Rd is not as well travelled but is a great patch of woodland and meadow habitat.

It has been a bit neglected so is starting to degrade into scrub and become taken over by balsam so I am hoping to do some more work here next year to preserve this amazing patch.

Hopefully we can get a big balsam bashing group here next year!

We'll be doing some more meadow management work here in October during the regular Monday Prospects sessions, get in touch if you'd like to help out!

Me and Robert had a little planning meeting today,
The Following dates for your diaries have been agreed, we could have more practical dates to follow/ad hoc dates if people fancy.

Sunday 4th October, 9am to 11am (litter Pick, meet at Arden hall gates)

Sunday 22nd November. 9am to 12noon. (Coppice hazel, meet at Avenue Parade gates)

Late November/early December, evening meet up to use hazel to make a reef decoration.

Sunday 31st January, RSPB Bird Count, 9.30am - 12noon. Meet at Coppice Bowling Club.

Nice to see everyone this evening. The met office kept it's promise we stayed dry! I will be getting my Google lens out in the new year trying to pick wildflowers we have planted in this area!
Nice to finish off the balsam in Arden woods area as well. 🤞not much will grow back there.
I will post details of upcoming sessions for the autumn into winter soon.
New volunteers are always welcome follow are page for details.
Thanks for helping us do our little bit for this local nature reserve.
