DanceSyndrome is an innovative North West based inclusive dance charity, led by people with learning disabilities. Established in 2009, DanceSyndrome is the inspiration of founder and Director, Jen Blackwell, an aspiring community dance leader, who happens to have Down’s syndrome. DanceSyndrome believes that everyone has the right to follow their own interests and passions – regardless of whether

they have a disability or not; and exists to support Jen, and other dancers like her, who are learning disabled and want to lead and inspire others to share their love of dance through inclusive community workshops, dance leader training and performances.

Thank you to Chief Nurse Oliver Soriano, Paul Jebb & Kevin O'Hara from Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust for coming to visit DanceSyndrome today to hear from our Dancers, Parents & Carers. It was great to discuss ideas and opportunities for future partnership working! Together we can improve support and access for people with learning disabilities, and collaborate on vital 'Inclusion in Action' training & away days for teams working across the NHS.

We look forward to continued conversations to drive real impact across Lancashire & beyond!

Last week was Sam's first session as a trainee Dance Leader for our online Street Dance class. It was a fantastic session and we're all very proud of Sam, who has progressed from participating in our sessions, to training on our online Level 1 Dance Leadership course. He hopes to be a qualified Dance Leader soon!

You can join Street Dance on Wednesdays at 6pm, or check out our other Zoom sessions at: www.dancesyndrome.co.uk/sessions

DS Youth Collective had an exciting day at The Lowry for North West regional platform in March, where they performed a new piece called “Gender”. It was a wonderful experience and the group thoroughly enjoyed working with Thick & Tight choreography toolkit.

DS Youth will be performing ‘Gender’ again at our EXPRESS ‘26 Showcase at Blackburn Empire Theatre Thursday 11th June.

We’d love it if you would come and support this community showcase!

A big thank you to Aaron Howell for filming this performance.

Video description: A reel with a purple background, with text overlay introducing “Gender”, a DS Youth performance inspired by movements from Thick & Tight around the theme of gender. The reel shows DS Youth dancers performing on stage in cream tops and tartan skirts, moving together in lines, circles and expressive group formations. The dancers use playful poses, energetic movement and supportive choreography. The reel ends with details for EXPRESS ’26 at Blackburn Empire Theatre on 11th June 2026.
