DanceSyndrome DanceSyndrome is an inclusive dance charity based in Lancashire with a focus on including everybody.

DanceSyndrome is an innovative North West based inclusive dance charity, led by people with learning disabilities. Established in 2009, DanceSyndrome is the inspiration of founder and Director, Jen Blackwell, an aspiring community dance leader, who happens to have Down’s syndrome. DanceSyndrome believes that everyone has the right to follow their own interests and passions – regardless of whether they have a disability or not; and exists to support Jen, and other dancers like her, who are learning disabled and want to lead and inspire others to share their love of dance through inclusive community workshops, dance leader training and performances.

Artists from Lancashire-based DanceSyndrome are preparing to take to the stage at The Lowry in November with a one-night-only performance. It brings together six newly commissioned dance pieces developed through their iCreate project, in collaboration with diverse international choreographers.

❄️ The DanceSyndrome Winter Showcase is coming up! ❄️

Our Zoom participants are going to be starting work on their performance pieces for the Winter Showcase in the next couple of weeks.

If you've been thinking about trying out an online dance session or if you're keen to give online performance a try, now is a great time to sign up! We'll have you performing by Christmas!

DanceSyndrome is proud to have been involved with The University of Salford's School of Health and Society on their research project: "Pathways to Participation: Designing Creative Research Methods with People Living with a Learning Disability."

This 9-month project explored ways for people with learning disabilities to define research methods that best support them in sharing their perspectives. By positioning participants as methodological co-creators, the work sought to challenge typical approaches to evaluation.

Through a series of creative workshops - photography, visual art, poetry, dance and movement, and singing - DanceSyndrome participants explored how their voices and experiences could be expressed through these different artforms.

Their engagement offered insights into how creative methods can be adapted, blended, and chosen by people with learning disabilities themselves.

You might recognise Ellie Bamber from our π™Šπ™π™„π™‚π™„π™‰ poster.

Ellie has been a dancer with us since 2019. She has co-delivered dance workshops, completed Dance Leadership training, been a Youth Dance Role Model and performed across the UK, including at prestigious platforms such as the Edinburgh Fringe, UDance and Making Moves. She's now looking forward to a solo performance at The Lowry in November!

DanceSyndrome has not just given Ellie incredible experiences, it has given her friendship, acceptance and self-belief, helping her to have the confidence to persue opportunities outside of DanceSyndrome too.

Developed through DanceSyndrome’s iCreate programme, which places Artists with learning disabilities at the heart of the collaborative process, ORIGIN is a mixed bill of six newly commissioned dance pieces, created with international choreographers.

Joyful, daring and deeply original - ORIGIN is a powerful celebration of creativity, collaboration and artistic freedom. It is a defining moment: the beginning of something really exciting, a space where all Artists are seen, valued and celebrated.
