WOW! Just look at how fast the hedgerow trees at St Hubert's Primary School have grown! 🌳

It was only two years ago that Helen, our TreeACTION Officer, taught the students how to plant these 250+ trees, and look at them now!

Earlier this week, Helen returned to visit the school’s Eco Group and teach them how to care for the young trees by straightening their canes and clearing grass from the tubes.

We’re delighted to see this hedgerow already making such a positive impact for local wildlife, while also helping to screen nearby building works and create more privacy for students.

This bank holiday Monday we are at the Great Harwood Agricultural Show! Come down and sow your own wildflowers to take home, find out about our upcoming free events and volunteering opportunities, and learn about how to look after your local green spaces. You might even get some freebies if you're quick enough!

On Tuesday 19th May 2026 the Hyndburn's Woodlands Volunteers were back at Rushton House Farm continuing with the dead-hedging work we started a few weeks ago.

Volunteers used hand tools to process fallen Lodge-pole pine into different sized lengths (large base material, thinner infilling material, and brash to cover the tops).

Stakes were made from some of the larger base material, used to create the frame of the dead-hedge.

Dead-hedges are valuable woodland additions which create habitat for small invertebrates, birds, and mammals. They also add a lot of aesthetic value to woodlands.

Thank you to our incredible volunteers who help create habitat within Hyndburn's Woodlands!

Thank you to everyone that attended the People’s Emergency Briefing film screening at Accrington Academy last week.

Many people have contacted us see what action they can take to get the film seen by more people across the country. These actions include:

✔️ Contacting your MP to ask them to sign the Parliamentary Call for a national televised screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing
✔️ Contacting your MP to ask them to support Early Day Motion 93. A short message to your MP (including your address) could simply say: “I’m writing as your constituent to ask whether you would consider signing EDM 93, which calls for a televised emergency briefing on the climate and nature crisis, led by independent experts. I believe the public deserves a clear and honest explanation of the risks we face, and of the opportunities and benefits available if we respond with the urgency and scale required.”

A free community film screening: The People’s Emergency Briefing.
What’s happening with climate and nature, and what does it mean for everyday life in the UK?
Come and watch this eye-opening film bringing together nine leading UK scientists and experts with the latest evidence and why it matters for things like:
🌧️ Extreme weather
🍞 Food security
🏥 Health
💷 Cost of living
The film is based on the National Emergency Briefing in Westminster (featured by ITV, Channel 4 and The Times) with appearances from Chris Packham, Deborah Meaden, and a range of voices from across the UK.
After the film there will be a short open discussion about what it means for our community and what we can do locally.
📍 Accrington Academy, Queens Road West, Accrington, BB5 4FF (park on the school car park, the gates will be open)
📅 Weds 13th May 2026
🕖 6pm - 8pm
Bring a friend, neighbour or family member: everyone is welcome (16 years and over recommended).
This event is being organised by the Prospects Foundation and Maundy Relief with the venue kindly provided by Accrington Academy.

On Tuesday 12th May 2026 the Hyndburn's Woodlands Volunteers were at Huncoat East woodland carrying out some site maintenance work.

We mended the boundary fence, which borders the motorway, that has had choice lengths stolen. Unfortunately, this had been done in a way that had left small pieces remaining, meaning they had to be sawn out of the structure.

After mending, we took to working on the paths to cut back encroaching vegetation and trees which were obscuring vision

🌳 TREE MAINTENANCE MONDAYS 🌳

The TreeACTION Project has started a new series of events called 'Tree Maintenance Mondays'!

Every Monday in May, June & July, Helen will be at a different site doing a multitude of maintenance tasks such as changing broken stakes, removing grass from tubes, adding wood chip as mulch and checking on the general health of our new trees!

Today we were on Willows Lane outside Bullough Park, mulching our impressive line of 20 silver birch.

As part of our Brookside Restoration Initiative, our friends at the RRT are running another River Blitz event in Hyndburn. Last year's was a brilliant success, with so many of you helping to collect water quality data.
