Rising and Sinking Like Mountains in Streams
An hour of visceral poetry performance led by the Vietnamese artist Nha Thuyên and the duo MontenegroFisher, this event showcases an artistic exploration of two rivers – the Red River, which runs through Vietnam, and the River Wye, which runs through Wales.
Inspired by the classical female poet Ho Xuân Hương, this international collaboration results in a performance resonating with resilience, sensuality and nature’s force. Joined by two emerging artists from Wales the project interprets landscape, language and sound through the lens of ecology. Dr Wanda O’Connor is an academic and writer working in contemporary poetry and poetics; Lowri Hedd Vaughan is a regenerative practitioner concerned with the restoration of natural living systems.

Rehearsal for today’s public performance of ‘Rising and Sinking Like Mountains in Streams’, a collaboration between UK and Vietnamese artists connecting two rivers, the Red River in and the River Wye in through new work based on observation and deep listening to nature. Thanks to our partner Ajar Press and poet Nhã Thuyên and to the duo Montenegro Fisher, as well as British Council Vietnam.

We are in Hanoi for an exploration of the Red River with performances by Nhã Thuyên (VN) and montenegrofisher (Luna Montenegro & Adrian Fisher, UK), accompanied by Nguyễn Hữu Hải Duy and Thuỳ Dương, with remote contributions from Welsh artists Lowri Hedd Vaughan and Wanda O’Connor.

This hybrid residency project will result in sonic and poetic performances developed from field trips and collaborative practice. The project links the Red River (Hanoi) and the River Wye (Wales), bringing together experienced and emerging artists for ecological listening, collective writing, and participatory creation.

Yesterday Chu Thị Ngọc Anh (Kiu) and Vũ Thục Khuyên from ThinkPlaygrounds led a fascinating eco-walk along the river. 🙏🏼

Organised by Literature Across Frontiers & ajar press with support from British Council Vietnam and the Programme, in partnership with Think Playgrounds - Nghĩ về Sân Chơi trong phố, Matca and Quán nhạc Cầm in Hanoi.
