For the past nine nights, St John Ambulance Cymru volunteers from across Dyfed County and beyond have been out in Aberystwyth supporting Aberystwyth University’s Big Welcome Week, working alongside the fantastic Undeb Aberystwyth Students’ Union A-Team volunteers.
Our teams have been right in the middle of the night-time economy, helping to keep freshers, returning students and the wider Aberystwyth community safe during one of the busiest weeks of the year.
Over the nine nights, we’ve seen hundreds of you. Some stopped for a chat or to say hello, while others needed a little more support, first aid or medical treatment. Our Event Responders have been able to assess and treat people in town and at our dedicated medical centre, with ambulance transport arranged when someone has needed further care.
Having our volunteers on the ground means many people can be treated safely there and then, helping to reduce unnecessary pressure on Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust and local NHS services during an exceptionally busy week.
And behind those nine nights are a lot of volunteer hours. Late finishes, wet Aberystwyth nights, plenty of walking, countless cups of tea and, judging by the photographic evidence, a strategically significant quantity of chocolate.
A huge thank you to every St John Ambulance Cymru volunteer who has given their time over the past nine nights, including those who travelled from outside Dyfed to support us. And thank you to the A-Team volunteers and everyone else we’ve worked alongside throughout the week.
Most of all, thank you to everyone who came over to say hello, asked for help when they needed it, or simply looked out for their mates.
Welcome to Aberystwyth. We hope you have an amazing year. 💚
