Kinmel Bay/Towyn Youth Shed
The Kinmel Bay YS came about as a result of the Colwyn Bay and Denbigh Shedderz taking part in a networking event at Itaca, Abergele earlier this year. At the event the Shedderz met a local PCSO, Kerri Adams, who later got in touch with us to ask if we could bring the Youth Shed project to Kinmel Bay to work with four young local lads who were, let’s say, were at a bit of a loose end in the evening, with time on their hands! Scott and Melody have been meeting the boys for a few months in Kinmel Bay library and good progress has been made with the boys attending every week, eating together and discussing plans for their own shed.
Youth Shedz were contacted by Sharon at Creatasmile in Towyn who has kindly donated a large shed that is at the rear of the Creatasmile centre. The boys are hoping to move into the shed soon and start a bicycle repair workshop. The boys have recently been awarded a grant for £500 to help them with equipment costs. As the boys only will use the Shed on a Wednesday night it means that there is opportunity to engage the Creatasmile Young People and we hope to sign them up as Shedderz and have a shed that is suitable for youngsters with learning needs such as Autism, ADHD etc which means the shed can be open all week.
Achievements so far:
· The boys have made significant improvements in their behaviour, so much so that the local police sergeant was singing their praises. They have also been ‘policing’ their own area as they don’t want others to spoil their chances of having a Youth Shed.
