Inspired by the words of Julia Myers and other collaborative global stitch projects. Some of you may remember the Stop & Sketch collaborative project we organised in 2019 which culminated in a very successful exhibition at Abergavenny Festival of Art. (see our page) A few of us contributed stitched works and I thought at the time that it would be good to have a Stop & Stitch event too. Earlier thi
s year I joined the Stitch Meditation page on Facebook and following Liz Kettle’s instruction video I have been using the process, during lockdown, to still my mind by creating small stitch meditations. I had intended to hold some stitch meditation workshops locally but Covid 19 has put paid to that. Inspired by some other amazing collaborative works and the awesome words of Julia Myers, the idea of putting together a global collaborative “New Quilt of Humanity” has taken root inside me. Therefore, I would like to ask the global stitching community to join me by sending me either a 4” x 4” or 5” x 5” piece of stitch meditation which I will mount on a suitable backing. Please message this page or e-mail me at [email protected] for the address to send your stitch meditation to. The pieces are quickly and simply made using scraps of waste fabric and very simple stitches. It is more about the process, the feel of the fabric in your hands, the slowing down of your mind and relaxing into the rhythm of the stitch. When stitching I would also like you to think positive healing thoughts and words which will help heal our fractured world. Words like, hope; kindness; love; compassion; sustainability; rescue; heal; cherish etc. You may find you want to stitch some of these words into your work. After all, thoughts become things and collective thoughts become bigger things!
