A beautiful reminder of what public ownership of electricity in Scotland looks like. This dam, and the others like it built in this period, connected the Highlands to electricity for the first time!

The profits from electricity sales were used to lower energy prices for homes across Scotland!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⚡

On this day in 1965: Cruachan Power Station opened. Ben Cruachan looks like another picturesque Scottish munro, but buried a kilometre deep inside the Argyll mountain is the world’s first reversible, pumped-storage hydro scheme.

It pumps water up from Loch Awe to an upper reservoir on the mountainside, then releases it through underground turbines to power homes within seconds, when energy demand increases. It remains a towering triumph of Scottish engineering and renewable power.

A fresh snapshot of public opinion shows clear priorities that decision-makers need to hear:

📊 77% demand government investment in communities hit by industrial closures.
📊 63% want more investment in renewable energy. We think that community and public ownership should be at the heart of that.
📊 84% see our natural environment as one of Scotland’s most valuable assets.

The message is clear: a fair, community-led transition isn't just an ideal, it’s what the majority wants.

This comment on our last post hit the nail right on the head.

Why are we treating clean energy wealth like a favour being handed down to us? Whitelee sits on public land, local communities and councils shouldn't be handed "crumbs" at the developer's discretion.

We need public & community ownership stakes so profits go straight into local schools, roads, and lower energy bills.

Here's a picture of Whitelee Wind Farm, just south of Glasgow, from the air. It's the UK's biggest onshore wind farm. And, over the next few years, it's preparing to repower its massive turbines ⚡️

Repowering means replacing older turbines with much larger, ultra-efficient models that generate significantly more electricity and profit. In the end, there will be bigger turbines, but fewer overall.

Right now, overseas corporations and private operators extract vast profits from Scotland’s wind, while nearby communities often see very little return to fund public services, social care, or local energy bill relief.

We believe that when a major wind farm repowers, local councils and community trusts should secure a direct ownership stake and keep those millions in profits working for local people.

Should local councils get a direct share of local wind farm profits when projects repower?

It's just as we've been saying: Scots know that renewables are important, but they have to be benefitting our workers and communities! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🛠️
