We're calling on the next Scottish government to take some of the power from big companies and financiers, and use the country’s shift to renewable energy to make people in Scotland better off.

"Scotland has become a world leader in wind energy. With abundant onshore and offshore wind resources, and a growing fleet of turbines delivering low-carbon power, the nation now produces far more electricity than it currently consumes. But while the generation success is real, the economic benefits too often flow out of Scotland."

Renewables are everywhere in Scotland, but who is benefiting from them? With more community-owned energy, our communities could build the wealth they need to thrive.

That's why we're demanding that the Scottish Government to do more to back community-owned energy.

Renewables are essential for Scotland's energy future, but we've got to make sure that we're seeing the benefits.

We need to change the rules of the energy system altogether by demanding the Scottish Government back more community-owned energy.

.leask.msp, a MSP for Orkney, used his first speech in the Scottish Parliament today to urge the Scottish Government to back more community-owned energy.

Leask is right. Progress for community-owned energy is going too slow. It's within the power of the Scottish Government to change that.

"The Scottish Government already has significant powers it could use right now to make our energy system fairer and ensure the benefits of the transition to renewables are shared more widely.

Ministers can start by taking a public stake in all future offshore wind developments. If Scotland’s natural resources are generating enormous wealth, the public should share directly in the returns. Anything less means surrendering another generation of energy profits to private interests.

At a local level, there should be much more support for municipal and community ownership of renewables. Orkney Islands Council is already showing what’s possible, with ambitious plans for council-owned energy projects expected to generate millions for local services."

The questions about where our energy comes from, who owns it, and who profits from it have shaped Scottish politics for half a century
