NESBReC North East Scotland Biological Records Centre NESBReC collates, manages and provides biological information for the North East of Scotland. [email protected]

Founded in 2000, NESBReC covers Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City, Moray and since 2009 the Cairngorms Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) area. Currently over 1 million species records are held, as well as other biological datasets. We do this to support the North East Local Biodiversity Action Plan and the National Biodiversity Network
Please send us records of all plants and animals that you see a

nd can confidently identify. Every record is important. While rare species may be more exciting to find, it is very important to record common species too. All records help to build up a more comprehensive understanding of the natural world in which we live, and can help ensure that decisions, which may affect habitat and species in the North East of Scotland, are made with the best available knowledge. We require four basic pieces of information for each record:
What - The name of the plant or animal. Common names or preferably the scientific name e.g. Sciurus vulgaris (Red Squirrel), so as to avoid confusion. Where - Gives a close indication of the location of the sighting. A 6-figure grid reference is preferable and also a name of the nearest location which is shown on an Ordnance Survey map. When - Date of the record, ideally written as dd/mm/yyyy. Who - Name of the recorder. If someone else helped you with identification or confirmed your record please send us their name too. Any more information that you collect will add to the value of your record e.g., habitat where you found it, numbers or abundance, male or female, stage of life cycle, its behaviour, or other plants it was growing with. If the data is confidential please let us know. Please send records in using our online form or by downloading our excel spreadsheet or casual wildlife recording form at http://www.nesbrec.org.uk/

If you are planning a coastal walk in north east Aberdeenshire, keep your eye out for the beautiful scilla verna, or Spring squill, photographed here from Kinnaird Head last weekend. We are particularly interested in any records between Peterhead and Cruden Bay. If you think you've seen one, please take a photo and let us know! Spring squill grows on wind-swept sea cliffs and other coastal habitats, with the pale blue flowers appearing in spring.

This beautiful Puss moth, Cerura vinula, was photographed by David Elston and Carol Blow at the Bullers of Buchan last weekend. Puss moths can be found in gardens, hedgerows, open woodland, moorland and scrub. Caterpillars feed on Willow and Poplar or suckers of Aspen and Goat Willow in sunny spots...
When disturbed and as a warning, the caterpillars will raise their head and wave twin tails, which have pinkish extendable flagellae. They may even sq**rt formic acid at the attacker if the defence warning is unheeded. Adults fly from May to July.

We received a lovely record of the black soldier beetle, Cantharis obscura, recently near Fetternear, Aberdeenshire. There aren't many records of this species from the north east, and its distribution across the UK is clumped in areas with upland vegetation. This would appear to be the determining factor rather than any northern or southern preferences. Many thanks to Graeme Reid for the stunning photo, and to Bruce Philp for verifying!

We had a wonderful team day in the Montrose basin this week, which started off with some recording in the morning. We recorded birds such as shelducks, terns, eiders, oystercatchers, buzzards, herons, wrens, chiff chaffs, blackcaps, various plants and butterflies and even some fungi. Let us know in the comments if you can ID any of the species photographed!
A huge thank you to Montrose Basin Wildlife Reserve and Visitor Centre for your hospitality!

We are delighted to share that we have now reached over 3 million records here at NESBReC! With special thanks to Liz Bracegirdle whose record of the common lizard, Zootoca vivipara, from Deeside was our 3 millionth record! We would like to thank each and every one of our contributors, from casual recorders to expert verifiers… we couldn’t do what we do without you!

Meet the three millionth record for the North East Scotland Biological Records Centre (NESBReC)! 🥳

🦎The local lizard Zootoca vivipara was spotted and photographed by Liz Bracegirdle as it basked on a pottery urn in Slewdrum near Potarch (pictured).

NESBReC is part of Aberdeenshire Council’s Environment & Sustainability Service. Its species data provides support for education and conservation bodies, national recording schemes and the wider community to assist with land use planning, conservation, site management, and research.

📢 A massive thank you to everyone who has helped NESBReC reach this significant milestone.

The recent warm and sunny weather has provided plenty of opportunities to spot our native reptiles, including slow worms. This individual was spotted basking on the Deeside Way and required evasive action to avoid running over it on a bicycle. Slow worms are often confused with snakes but are legless lizards which hunt for slugs, snails and earthworms in leaf litter and topsoil. You can check out their distribution on our species maps https://nesbrec.org.uk/biomaps/ Thanks to Richard for the record and photo.
