At Home: Respond, Don’t React
I’ve been thinking recently about how differently we behave at home compared with almost everywhere else.
Most of us can stay polite in a work meeting. We can remain patient with strangers. We can manage difficult conversations in public. Yet somehow the people we love most often see the most frustrated version of us.
I don’t think that’s because we care less. Quite the opposite.
Home is where life happens. It’s where we’re tired after a long day. It’s where the washing needs done, the dinner needs made, the dog wants out, the children need attention and there are still jobs sitting on the list that haven’t been touched.
In those moments it’s easy to slip into autopilot and react to what’s happening around us. That’s why emotional regulation matters so much. Not because it helps us avoid stress, but because it helps us respond to stress differently.
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is take a breath before speaking. Sometimes it’s lowering your voice instead of raising it. Sometimes it’s recognising that you’re tired and giving yourself a little grace.
Progress, not perfection.
