⚓ CEREMONIAL CLARIFICATION – CHAPLAINS & SALUTING
A quick clarification following some recent questions about Chaplains and saluting.
Chaplain is a rank. Sea Cadet Chaplains are commissioned members of the Cadet Forces and hold the rank of Chaplain.
You may hear the phrase that a Chaplain is “the same rank as the person they are talking to.” This refers to their pastoral approach, not their actual rank.
A Chaplain should be able to sit down with anyone — from the newest cadet to the most senior officer — and engage with them on the same human level. They are there as a friend and adviser to everyone, regardless of rank, faith or lack of faith.
This does not, however, change their actual rank.
🫡 Saluting Chaplains
Chaplains are to be saluted in accordance with RN/SCC regulations. BRd 1834 confirms that ratings are to salute officers and Chaplains.
The important point to remember is:
👉 Chaplains are saluted.
👉 Chaplains do not initiate a salute.
👉 They return a salute when one is offered.
