Meet Fiona.
Fiona is one of Charlie House’s Children and Family Support Workers, providing emotional support, advocacy and practical guidance to children, parents, carers and siblings through some of life’s most difficult moments.
For Fiona and the team, every day looks a little different. One day might involve using toys like worry monsters or emotion cards with siblings, giving them a chance to open up about how they are feeling in a safe and supported way. Another might mean sitting with a parent over a cup of coffee, offering a safe space to talk. Group support, such as the men’s group and bereavement groups, provides a safe, relaxed space where parents, carers and siblings can connect with others who understand their experiences and draw strength from peer support. At other times, the role means walking alongside a family through bereavement.
No matter the support required, the care provided by Fiona and the team is always tailored, compassionate, and focused on the whole family.
Their aim is to offer families space, understanding, and most importantly, a hand to hold for as long as families need it. Because no one should have to cope with the challenges of complex care alone.
Fiona says: ‘One parent told me recently that just having someone check in, who remembered their child’s name and who they were, meant everything. They told me it showed them their child hadn’t been forgotten. I take it as an honour to walk alongside families and to be trusted to support them in their lives.'
It’s often the smallest moments that hold the greatest meaning. Moments like these show the power of gentle, compassionate support. Being seen, remembered, and cared for can make all the difference to families during their most difficult times.
This is why children and family support is an essential part of what we do at Charlie House 🧡
