Collecting materials and prepping patches for the workshops we have next week, kicking off at the Healing Arts Scotland Aberdeen day on the 15th and then The Suttie Arts Space on 16th and 17th June 2026.

GHAT Project and Exhibitions Team are hosting a series of quilt-making workshops over 4 days with the Refugee Festival Scotland, Healing Arts Scotland participants, Cornhill Primary School and Aberdeen City Council’s Social Work Team’s Young Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking participants.

Participants are invited to create their own vibrant quilt hexagons using an exciting mix of materials from fabric scraps and recycled clothing to unexpected items like old sports gear. They will experiment with a range of creative techniques to bring their quilts to life. Throughout the sessions, the individual hexagons will be stitched together resulting in one large quilt by the end of the week. Celebrating the imagination of everyone involved.

The workshops are drop in and you are welcome to spend as much or as little time as you want. No experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to create together.

All materials are provided.

Last week, the Chief Medical Officer, Prof Sir Gregor Smith, visited NHS Grampian to see first-hand how Realistic Medicine is being brought to life, delivering care that focuses on what matters most to people, not simply what is clinically possible.

GHAT was proud to be part of this important visit, sharing how our work contributes to this approach by supporting the wellbeing of patients, visitors and staff every day through the arts. Our programmes are designed to create welcoming, human-centred environments, helping to enhance experiences of care and connection across hospital settings.

During his visit, Sir Gregor encountered elements of the hospital’s art collection along his route to the wards, offering moments of reflection and interest within the clinical environment. The visit concluded in the Suttie Arts Space, where he and his team, had the opportunity to engage more directly, contributing a piece to a collaborative patchwork being created through GHAT’s Refugee Festival Scotland workshops.

It was a valuable opportunity to demonstrate how our 40 year partnership with NHS Grampian and NHSG Charity supports the delivery of Realistic Medicine in practice. Together, we are helping to place people at the heart of care, recognising the important role that arts and creativity can play in supporting health, wellbeing and compassionate healthcare environments.

Grampian Hospitals Arts Trust has some fabulous news to share. We are incredibly grateful to The Suttie Foundation, who have awarded us £35,000 per year for the next three years. This generous support strengthens our exhibitions programme and helps sustain the much‑loved Suttie Arts Space in ARI, continuing to honour the legacy of Ian and Dorothy Suttie through the care and development of this unique creative environment.

The grant will also support the GHAT Art Collection, displayed throughout hospitals across the North East, ensuring patients, staff, and visitors can experience the comfort, connection, and calm that art brings during difficult moments.
Our ten‑year partnership with the Suttie family has played a huge role in GHAT’s growth since the building of the Suttie Space. Their continued generosity ensures we can keep offering moments of solace, inspiration, and wellbeing to people across the region.
