A scale model of our solar system set into the tarmac of a path in Maryhill Park in Glasgow. The relative sizes of the planets are indicated by the size of the hole in the centre of each marker, while the distance between them is proportional to the real distances between the planets.

One of the things I love about Glasgow is that people take the time to do things like this, and they make all our lives just a little bit better.

Thanks to Ben Cooper for telling me about the existence of this rather wonderful bit of scientific street art.

Rocket shockwaves, crossing in front of the Sun.
Amazing detail as a Falcon leaves Earth from Florida. Cool to clearly see the rocket exhaust turbulence and shape, and even sunspots.
From the Mach cone half-angle equation sin(μ) = 1/M, it looks like the SpaceX Falcon is already going about Mach 2.5 (2.5 times the speed of sound). But check my math :)

At the just-completed 2026 Northeast Astronomy Forum (NEAF — April 10th & 11th), our Tele Vue booth contained a curated exhibit honoring some of the varied interests of our founder, Albert Nagler. This exhibit included items spanning over a century of time. For instance, we had Al’s Alvan Clark & Sons 4″ f/15 refractor from 1882 and Al’s homemade “Snake Coffin” 8″ folded Petzval refractor from 1982. From 1980 were Al’s personal C8 “Orange Tube” SCT and the prototype of his original Nagler 13mm eyepiece. More recent items included a prototype of the NASA / Southwest Research Institute PUNCH lens from 2022 and his Apollo 11mm commemorative eyepiece from 2019. We also had a slide show and a video loop of Al giving his “I Thank My Lucky Stars” presentation, describing how serendipitous life events intertwined, allowing him to achieve all he had in his career.

Our latest blog post, Tribute to Al Nagler at NEAF 2026, is a review of this exhibit and the Tribute Banner that many signed. Please read and share using this shortened link:
