Where's your favourite place to enjoy nature in Torry?

We’ve recently launched Rooted in Torry, a community developed resource highlighting people’s favourite places and ways to interact with nature in Torry. You can pick up copies in the Greyhope Bay Centre, Greyhope Community Hub, and Torry Medical Practice. Please take a copy, explore, and tell others.

We worked with Rosa Eisenberg (.e.illustration), a local illustrator and mental health educator, who created 30 beautiful illustrations based on people's suggestions and memories. Our Charity Manager Frances whittled down the huge list of suggestions and wrote the text, then our graphic designer James () pulled everything together. We're thrilled with how Rooted in Torry turned out and can't wait to see you using it.

A huge thank you to everyone who shared their suggestions to shape this resource. Thanks to the Aberdeen City Health & Social Care Partnership () for funding this project via the Health Improvement Fund.

🩵 Volunteer Appreciation Week 🩵

We have some of the best volunteers in the world. Without them, Greyhope Bay would not be the place it is and our impact would be smaller as they help us reach more people to connect them with each other and the coast.

Last year, our volunteers contributed over 1,703 hours! We were shocked when we calculated that figure and we're pretty sure it's a wee bit higher as it's hard to track everything our volunteers do. What does 1,703 hours mean in reality?

🎫 The bottom line: we were able to run 87 events attended by 1,551 people, which helped them connect with local nature, contribute to citizen science, tap into their creativity, learn about history, and look after the local environment.

🩵 They support our Charity and Cafe staff team by helping in the Cafe, talking to visitors, connecting us with other community groups, organising events, promoting events, taking photos, doing regular operational activities on site, and so much more.

🌊 Our Trustees play a vital role with governance and compliance, mentorship, accountability, direction, and advice.

They volunteer for many reasons: some of them have a deep connection with Torry Battery, to socialise, because they love nature, to improve their well-being, to learn new skills, to share their skills with others, to help other people realise how great this place is, or to give back to the community.

We tell them regularly how much we appreciate them, but please join us in saying a huge thank you to the Greyhope Bay volunteers.

WILD WEDNESDAY - KITTIWAKE (Rissa tridactyla)

It may not seem like it, but the most numerous species of gull in the UK is the Kittiwake. They belong to the Laridae family which includes all the big “seagulls” that we know and love, along with terns. They are the most “pelagic” of the gulls, which means they spend the most time at sea.

In summer they arrive to breed on the sheer cliffs of our coastline, and the rest of the year is spent flying and floating in big rafts on the furthest reaches of the North Sea and into the Atlantic with some birds going as far as Canada. They rarely fly inland or reside in urban areas, barring a few exceptional colonies in England and Norway.

They are named based on their calls - a repetitive screeching scream that goes “kiiiitttttiii-WAAAAAKE”. This call can be heard echoing across the cliffs of the Cove Coastal Path and at the Bullers and Longhaven.

They are a relatively small and gentle looking gull, but they may be hard to separate them from the similar shaped Common Gulls. Compared to the pale greenish yellow feet of the common gull, the Kittiwake will sport black feet. Kittiwakes also appear to have completely black “dipped in ink” wingtips while Common Gulls have some white on their wingtips. Curiously the insides of their mouth is bright red and this can occasionally be seen extending towards the edges of their beak.

The Kittiwake is facing significant pressures on its environment primarily from poorly managed fisheries and climate change as they are heavily reliant on stocks of small fish. They are not just locally recognised as a Red List bird of conservation concern, their conservation concerns extend globally as a Vulnerable species under the International Union for the Conservation of Nature classification.

Greyhope Morning: guided nature walk.

Join the Greyhope Bay team, the day after World Oceans Day, for a walk to explore the species living along Aberdeen's coast. We'll keep our eyes peeled for swallows flitting in and out of the Battery walls, linnets and whitethroats amongst the gorse, colourful flowers at our feet, dolphins leaping, seabirds fishing, butterflies sunning themselves, and more.

📆 Tuesday 9th June, 10:00 - 12:00.
📍Greyhope Bay Centre
💰Free to attend, donations welcome.
☕ Free tea & coffee served by our brilliant volunteers. As we'll be heading outside, please bring a reusable coffee cup if you have one.

🖌 Have you tried out the new sketch books in the Greyhope Bay Centre & Cafe yet?

This week some of our Cafe and Charity staff members drew their favourite species from around Greyhope Bay (we're yet to spot Adam's mythical skittle newt, mind). Please pick up a sketch book + coloured pencils and see where your creativity takes you. We can't wait to see what you draw.

We'd love to share some of your artwork (like on kids tv shows in the 90s) so feel free to take a photo with your drawings and send them in. When we have a few, we'll make a post like this and share them.

We had SO much fun at our BioBlitz last week - we spoke with over 188 people and recorded 195 unique species! It was great to see so many people of all ages learning about Aberdeen's nature.

We'd like to say a huge thank you to the people who helped make this event possible:
- Our volunteers: Linda T, Julia, Andy, Kendall, Linda M, Norman, Ashleigh, Pam, Lynne, Callum, Syabil, Sheila, Amy,
- Our experts: David Leslie, Laura Sharp, Brian Stewart, Richard Woods, Kevin Paterson, Andrew Whitehouse, Adam Robertson, Charlotte Wood, and Greyhope Bay staff members Frances Coombey, Allie Glew, and Rosie Baillie.
- Our Cafe team for keeping us well caffeinated: H**e, KT, and Adam.

Finally, thank you to everyone who attended, spoke with our volunteers and staff. We hope you all learned about at least one new species and plan to get back out exploring nature soon! What was your favourite species you spotted?
