Located in the centre of Portlethen, our nursery benefits from great local amenities, giving children plenty of opportunities to explore, learn, and connect with their community.

We provide a relaxed, home-from-home environment inspired by the Danish hygge approach—creating a calm, cosy space where children feel safe, happy, and valued. Our nurturing and supportive team bring a wealth of experience, ensuring every child is cared for and encouraged to thrive.

We offer high-quality care and learning for children aged 2–4 years, with flexible sessions to suit your family:
🕘 9:00–12:00
🕛 12:00–3:00
🕘 9:00–3:00

We accept Tax-Free Childcare and offer up to 1140 funded hours, available as a full 30 hours per week or as part of a split placement with another provider.

We’re also open during selected holiday periods from 8am till 4pm:
🌼 1 week at Easter
☀️ 3 weeks in summer
🍂 1 week in October

🌍 Around the World at Friendship Rainbow🌍

Over the last few weeks, through the children’s interests and curiosity about the world around them, we have been exploring different countries and learning about the wonderful ways people live, speak, and celebrate across different cultures.

We have been discovering countries including France, Italy, Scotland, India, Japan, and Poland. Together, the children explored where these countries are on the map, recognised and discussed their flags, listened to different languages, and even sampled some traditional foods from each country.

On Monday, we enjoyed a special walk to one of Portlethen’s new shops, Dino Market, which serves Polish delicatessen foods. The children loved looking around the shop and carefully choosing different foods to try back at nursery, including hams, cheeses, and breadsticks. Back at nursery, we enjoyed tasting the foods together while talking about Poland, learning to recognise the Polish flag, and practising how to say “Cześć” which is "hello" in Polish with help from some of our friends 😊

Following children’s interests in this way helps create meaningful learning experiences and encourages children to ask questions, share ideas, and explore the world around them with confidence.

Through these experiences, the children are becoming:

✨ Successful Learners – exploring new experiences, languages, and traditions
✨ Confident Individuals – sharing their thoughts and trying unfamiliar foods and experiences
✨ Responsible Citizens – developing respect and understanding for different cultures and communities
✨ Effective Contributors – working together, asking questions, and sharing ideas with their friends

Waiting List Update 🌈

Everyone currently on our waiting list with a child turning 2 before mid-September has now been emailed. If you have not received a message from us, please check your spam or junk folder.

If you no longer require a space, we would appreciate you letting us know, as this helps reduce additional administration time and allows us to offer places to other families.

Our waiting list is always open, and it is never too early to register your child’s details. Planning ahead allows us to keep families as up to date as possible regarding future availability.

As a private setting, we are passionate about providing affordable childcare. This year, we have chosen not to increase our fees in order to continue supporting families in accessing childcare. We also do not charge additional consumable fees on top of your child’s session fees.

At Friendship Rainbow, we are very passionate about the early years and how they build the stepping stones for the future 🌈

Did you know that we also run a baby and toddler group within the community centre?

Our group offers a relaxed and friendly environment where you and your little ones can come along, have fun, and meet others. It’s a great opportunity to build connections and enjoy some quality time together.

🧸 When: Every Wednesday, and alternate Thursdays and Fridays
⏰ 10:00am – 12:00pm

💷 Cost: £2 per session
(Includes a snack for little ones and refreshments for grown-ups)

We’re delighted to share that we will now be open 8:00am – 4:00pm during selected school holidays. 🎉

We know how challenging childcare can be during the holidays, and how many families end up splitting annual leave just to make it work. We hope this will help make things that little bit easier 💛

We will be open for:
🌷 One week at Easter
☀️ Three week's during Summer
🍂 One week in October

Starting this Easter, these sessions will be available to registered families only.

As always, we welcome children aged 2–4 years, and we remain one of the few nurseries locally with no minimum session requirements.

We offer flexible sessions — morning, afternoon or full day — with the option to pay by the hour. We understand times are tough and want every child to have the very best start to their early years, in a way that works for your family 💚

We are looking for passionate individuals to join us as a Early Years Practitioner / Support Worker within our setting. 💛

Experience is desirable, however we will also consider applicants who are keen to learn, enthusiastic, and have a genuine willingness to work in the sector. All training required for the role will be provided.

💛 Supporting Our Families 💛

We understand that the rise in cost of living is affecting many families right now. To help during these challenging times, we have frozen our current fees to provide stability and support.

We remain committed to offering high-quality early learning and childcare at an affordable cost, ensuring every child gets the very best start. 🌟

We will review our fees again in August to ensure the long-term sustainability of our service.

We are also proud to be one of the few nurseries with no minimum session requirement — because flexibility for families matters. 💚

This week marks 9 years of Friendship Rainbow, and we’re genuinely so grateful to still be here as a small local business. 🥰

It hasn’t always been easy. There have been highs we’re incredibly proud of and challenges that have tested us. Being a small business in our community comes with pressure and uncertainty at times, so reaching 9 years is something we don’t take for granted!

We wouldn’t still be here without the continued support of our families, children, staff team and the wider Portlethen community. Every place filled, every recommendation, every kind word and show of support has helped keep us going.

Here’s to lots of exciting things to come this year. We remain committed to providing high-quality, affordable childcare with a true home-from-home feel — always reflecting, always learning, and always evolving to meet the needs of our community.
