ATUC President Tommy Campbell and joint-secretary Kate Ramsden took the replica of the Spanish Civil war flag, used to wrap the bodies of fallen comrades and bring them home to Aberdeen, to the remembrance service in Glasgow on Saturday 10 October organised by the International Brigade Memorial Trust.

The flag was commissioned from art students at RGU and is an exact (but smaller) replica of the original flag which hangs behind glass in the ATUC Office at 22a Adelphi.

Speakers included Mike Arnott who gave the history of the Scots who fought and died in Spain, and Alison Campbell-Glass whose great grandfather was an international brigader. She drew parallels with the rise of fascism we are seeing again across Scotland, the UK, Europe and the US and warned us that we are again engaged in a struggle against the divisive politics of the far right and must bring the same passion and commitment to oppose it as was shown by those who fought against fascism in Spain.

President Tommy Campbell and joint secretary, Kate Ramsden were proud to attend the unveiling of the Nelson Mandela statue in Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow on Friday 9 October. Also caught up with our Unite comrade Stevie Dillon.

The date marks 33 years since Madiba visited Glasgow to receive (in torrential rain) the Freedom of the 9 Cities, conferred on him while still a prisoner on Robben Island. We are proud that Aberdeen was one of those cities. The heavens opened as the statue was unveiled, in memory of that day!

But the struggle against apartheid and racism continues in Palestine, in Scotland and across the world. This statue reminds us of the need to learn from our history and never forget the importance of standing up for the human rights of all. As Tommy says: “We are all Jock Tamson’s barns!”

RALLY FOR JOBS & OUR UNIVERSITY
📅 Tuesday 6 October, 6pm
📍 MacRobert Lecture Theatre
Our speakers are now confirmed for Tuesday’s rally, and we have a fantastic line-up bringing together students, staff, trade unionists and our wider community:
• Rhiannon Ledwell, Student Campaigner in MLIT dispute
• Professor David Anderson, Vice Chair, Aberdeen UCU
• Kaitlin Agius, President, AUSA
• Professor Ben Martin, speaking on behalf of the family of Dr Nicola Mackie
• Melissa D’Ascenzio, Co-President, Dundee UCU
• Tommy Campbell, Aberdeen Trade Union Council & Unite the Union
• Nathan Morrison, UCU Scotland Official
The rally is open to everyone, not just Aberdeen UCU members. Staff, students, members of other trade unions, friends, family and members of the wider Aberdeen community are all very welcome.
This is about bringing people together in solidarity, showing the strength of support for jobs and our University, and getting ourselves organised for what lies ahead.
We want to fill the MacRobert Lecture Theatre.
We also know this is an evening event and people have work, families and other commitments. This isn’t going to be a super-long event. We want a strong, focused rally that brings us together, builds confidence and sends a clear message that we are organised and ready to stand together.
The more of us who are there, the stronger that message will be.
👉 PLEASE REGISTER TO ATTEND:

Even if you have already told us you are coming, please make sure you register. It really helps us plan for numbers.
And please share the registration link with colleagues, students, friends and anyone else who wants to stand with us.

Please join this demonstration and stand with the children of Gaza.

Join us as we focus on Israel's genocidal massacres of Palestinian children in Gaza, over the last three years, and ongoing to the current day.

We will have a series of exhibits, speeches and poems, as well as creative protest activities for children and adults.

Our protest will have a clear message: there can be no normalisation, trade, or diplomatic relations with Israel.

And we will call on Aberdeen Art Gallery to review all of its donor arrangements and to commit to ending all ties with genocidal, apartheid Israel.

Boycott, Divest, Sanction.
