“Everyone knew everyone. If anyone needed anything, all you had to do was ask.”

Evelyn Cooper’s memories beautifully capture the heart of Torry, a close, caring and loving community where people looked out for one another and everyone felt like family.

This is what Voices of Torry is all about, celebrating the stories, memories and people that make Torry so special.

Allow us to reintroduce ourselves.

We are Voices of Torry: A community-driven platform created to listen, document, and share the real stories of the people of Torry. Through conversations, memories, history, culture, and everyday experiences, we want to shine a light on the voices that make this community what it is.

We believe everybody has a story to tell.
No story is too small.
No voice is insignificant.

Whether you have lived in Torry for generations, recently moved here, grew up here, or simply carry a connection to the community, we would love to hear from you.

If you have a story, memory, experience, or message you would like to share, send us a DM. This space is for the people of Torry, and your voice matters here.

This is Voices of Torry.

“I love Torry because it’s a very lively community, but it often gets bad press.”

For George Wood, Torry is more than the stories people hear from the outside. It is a place full of heritage, pride, and strong community spirit, with people who genuinely care about one another and where they come from.

“I could live anywhere, but I’m still in Torry.”

For Nathaniel, it comes down to the people.

The passion in the community.
The way people care for one another.
The love that makes this place feel like more than just somewhere to stay.

It is that sense of togetherness, of people building a real community and looking out for each other, that makes Torry worth holding on to.

If you live in Torry and have a story to share, send us a DM. We’d love to hear from you.

John Dunn spoke about why he loves Torry, and for him, it always comes back to the people. 💜

He shared how Torry’s history with the sea and fishing created a strong sense of community spirit and responsibility. Everyone depended on each other. If one person didn’t do their part, it affected everyone else.

From the baker to the mechanic to the fishing crew, people understood that community only works when people show up for each other.

And honestly, that spirit still lives in Torry today.

We recently had a Wetlands Walk through St Fittick’s Park, and it was really lovely to see it now open and beginning to take shape.

Even though work is still ongoing, it is already looking beautiful. There was something so peaceful about being there, seeing the space come alive, spotting so many birds, and even catching sight of deer along the way.

It felt like one of those quiet reminders of how special places like this can be. Spaces where people can walk, breathe, reflect, and reconnect with nature right in the heart of the community.

It is definitely worth going to see for yourself.

This past Saturday, we attended Climate Action for Torry, a community event organised by Aberdeen Climate Action that brought important conversations right into the heart of Torry.

The event brought together Old Torry Community Centre, Torry Heritage Group, University of Aberdeen Just Transition Lab, Friends of St Fittick's Park , St Fittick's Edible Garden, Peep Aberdeen City, ShmuFM and other community voices to talk not only about climate action, but also about things that matter deeply to everyday life, from support for families and children to nature, heritage, fairness, and building a better future for everyone.

What stood out most was the spirit of connection behind it all. It was not just about sharing information, but about people coming together, listening to one another, exchanging ideas, and thinking about what a stronger Torry can look like.

These are the kinds of moments that matter to us at Voices of Torry where stories, voices, and community needs meet in one place.

It was a pleasure to sit down with John Dunn, Chairperson of Torry Heritage , for such a thoughtful and insightful conversation.

We spoke about Torry’s heritage, the industries that once shaped the area, life in Torry over the years, and the stories, memories, and sense of community that continue to make Torry what it is today.

John has also previously spent time with young people and New Scots growing up in Torry today, generously sharing his knowledge of Torry’s history, harbour life, vessels, and heritage with the next generation.

In a changing and increasingly diverse community, these conversations matter. They help connect people not only to the history of a place, but to the people and stories that shaped it.

These are the kinds of conversations that remind us why preserving local voices, memories, and community history matters so much.
