We are deeply saddened to share that D-Day Veteran Donald Howkins has passed away aged 105.
Donald was one of the Memorial's earliest supporters nearly a decade ago, and one of the first Guardians. He also became one of the first Veterans to visit the site of the Memorial following the inauguration of the site in June 2019, and later when the Memorial was built. We will forever remember his support and kindness, and graciousness in sharing his story with us - a legacy that will live on.
His son Alan has shared a message in tribute to his father:
"In February of 1944, he married Dorothy, and together they raised 3 children, Michael, Alan and Susan. In June of 1944, he landed on Gold Beach and survived the Normandy campaign. He served with the Buckingham Yeomanry and later the 90th Middlesex HAA, Royal Artillery for the duration of the Second World War.
He spent his career as a butcher, operating butcher shops in North and South London where he connected with many customers who became lifelong friends.
When he was no longer able to return to Normandy for the D-Day anniversary, he showed his support locally by placing a wreath at the war memorial in Enfield and participating in other local events. He was honoured to be invited to attend the 80th anniversary of D Day commemoration at the Royal Albert Hall where he was received by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
The world has lost a prince of a man who will be impossible to forget or replace! Cheers to you, Dad."
