We are so saddened to hear that Royal Navy Veteran Alec Penstone has passed away aged 101.

Alec was a familiar visitor to the British Normandy Memorial thanks to our partners Spirit of Normandy Trust and attended the 80th anniversary commemorations. He will be greatly missed.

Alec trained as a submarine detector and prior to the Normandy Landings, Alec served in the Arctic Convoys battling severe weather to take war supplies to Russia. He served on the es**rt aircraft carrier HMS Campania during the Normandy Campaign.

He returned to the UK and married his sweetheart Gladys but was posted to the Far East two days later.

Rest in peace, dear friend. ❤️

Thank you Laura Knight Mayor of Amesbury, Home of Stonehenge for your support of 'In Monty's Footsteps'!

🇬🇧 Yesterday I had the honour of meeting Henry Montgomery during his “In Monty’s Footsteps” journey, retracing his grandfather’s 1944 tour and helping keep the stories of D-Day alive for future generations.

Listening to Henry speak was a powerful reminder that history is not just something we read about, it is deeply connected to towns like Amesbury and to the families who gave so much. ❤️🌺

The following Amesbury men are remembered on the British Normandy Memorial:
✨ Kenneth Allen Ware
✨ Edward Truckle
✨ Arthur James Pritchard
✨ Peter Blackwood Gray
✨ Eric Raymond Sidney Kirby
✨ Allan Alfred F. Noyce
✨ Reginald Norman Ware

Their sacrifice should never be forgotten.

We are so saddened to hear that Royal Air Force Veteran Gilbert Clarke has died aged 100. Gilbert regularly attended ceremonies at the British Normandy Memorial and generously shared his wartime story and memories with us and so many others. We will remember him with great fondness.

Born on 3rd December 1925, in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Gilbert left school at the age of 16 and followed his passion for electronics. In 1943 when the call came for volunteers to join the RAF, he applied, he lied about his age but passed with flying colours.

Gilbert and other new recruits travelled to South Virginia where they were surprised to encounter segregation. Crossing the Atlantic in convoy, surrounding ships were torpedoed, but fortunately Gilbert arrived in the UK safely.

While based at British and American air bases, Gilbert fitted, serviced and repaired radar and other electronic equipment for planes including Hurricanes, Spitfires and Lancasters. He remembered planes as far as you could see flying towards Europe on D-Day.

Years later, Gilbert shared that he volunteered "out of a sense of duty - to play my part in ensuring that we left the world in a better place for everyone".

Rest in Peace, Gilbert. ❤️
