🌿 Meet the Team: Xano

joined our Galicia team in November last year and immediately jumped into action.

Since then, he has led our participatory research project exploring how young people in rural Galicia experience climate and environmental challenges, helping us better understand how Sylvester can connect with and support the next generation of Galician rewilders.

Born and raised in a small village near Ferrol, Xano grew up with a strong connection to nature and the rhythms of the land. His path later took him across Europe, studying law, humanitarian action, diplomacy, and working in EU politics in Brussels. But over time, he found himself increasingly drawn back to the landscapes and knowledge systems he grew up with.

Today, that journey has brought him back to Galicia, where he combines his experience in policy, community engagement, and environmental action to help strengthen our work on the ground.

Alongside his work with Sylvester, Xano is exploring the restoration of native Galician trees on his own land and is passionate about reconnecting people with the ecological and cultural heritage of the region.

He also recently wrote a super interesting blog article reflecting on rewilding, identity, and what Galicia can teach us about living in closer relationship with the land.

We’re super happy to have Xano on the team and excited to see where this journey takes us together. 💚

We don’t just think in words.
We think in images, stories, memories, and associations. Yet climate change is often communicated through reports, statistics, and graphs that can feel distant from our everyday lives.

In her article, Visual Thinking: How to Tell a Story About the Climate Crisis, climate specialist and visual storyteller Mariam Kvaratskhelia explores how visual communication can help bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding. Drawing on psychology, art, and climate science, she makes the case that the way we communicate matters just as much as the information itself.

It’s a super interesting read for anyone interested in climate change, education, storytelling, or inspiring change.

A big thank you to TUTA MAGAZINE and Mariam for sharing this perspective and allowing us to feature it on our blog.

A few weeks ago, our Galicia team finally got the chance to swap video calls for real-life conversations 💚

Most of our work happens remotely, with team members spread across different places, so being able to spend a few days together on the ground was just super nice.

Since the beginning of the year, the team has led the implementation of two projects in Galicia. coordinated a community research project exploring how we can better connect with rural youth and support them in taking an active role in shaping climate action and restoration efforts in the region. took the lead on coordinating two rewilding workshops supported through a UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration Youth Task Force grant.

Marta, who is currently based in Sweden, supported the team with extensive background research and joined us on the ground to help with species surveys and workshop activities.

Both projects have now wrapped up, and we’re working on the next steps together. While many volunteers, partners, and community members contribute to making this work possible, we’re incredibly grateful for this small team and the energy, ideas, and commitment everyone brings to the project.

Special shout out also to for always making us feel super at home and helping wherever we are missing a hand 🫶🏽

Over the past months, we had the opportunity to contribute to a new report by the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration Youth Task Force, exploring the challenges and opportunities facing youth-led restoration initiatives around the world.

Through interviews, surveys, and discussions with young restoration practitioners across multiple regions, the report highlights a reality many grassroots projects know well: young people are already doing the work, but often lack access to the funding, support, and decision-making spaces needed to make restoration efforts thrive in the long term.

Many of the findings resonated strongly with our own experiences at Sylvester, making it especially meaningful to contribute to this collective effort.

Swipe through to explore some of the report’s key findings 👉

If you’d like to dive deeper, we’ve written a short blog post reflecting on the report and our involvement in the process. Link in bio.

ADH 2026 recap 🌊☕🍕

Another ADH in the books and somehow our fourth year already ❤️‍🔥

What started as a slightly chaotic idea to bring rewilding to a surf festival has become one of our favourite weeks of the year. For one week, our little Sylvester corner turns into a place for coffees, pizzas, wild conversations, new friendships, and lots of curious questions about rewilding.

The goal is simple: spread the word about what we’re building and raise funds for our projects on the ground. Every coffee, every pizza, every donation helps us turn ideas into rewilding action.

This year was extra special because our brand new Sylvester shirts made their first appearance 🙌🏽 and honestly, they flew. Big shoutout to .verstrepen for creating the design and making them look so damn good 💚

And of course, none of this would happen without the crew! Massive thank you to:

☕ , , and for keeping the coffee flowing all week long (and Lina for absolutely delivering the tunes on the final night 🎶)

🍕 and for somehow producing pizzas for hungry surfers day after day

🏄 The entire team for inviting us back once again and for being absolute legends in supporting us throughout the week

🫘 for providing us with the most delicious coffee beans and for supporting us with the best oat milk

💚 And of course everyone who stopped by, grabbed a coffee, ate a pizza, bought a shirt, had a chat, or left a donation, thank you!!! You’re helping us bring more rewilding projects to life.

We’re already excited for next year.

Until then, we’ll be busy turning your support into action on the ground 🌱

What does a thriving rewilded landscape actually look like? 🌿

Last weekend, our Galicia team organised an open visit to a long-running rewilding project to learn firsthand how wild horses, cattle, peatlands, heathlands, and native Atlantic forests work together to create resilient ecosystems.

From carnivorous plants hiding in peat bogs to ancient oak forests and powerful lessons on the difference between native woodland and eucalyptus plantations, the day was full of inspiration and learning.

A huge thank you to Juan and Xose for sharing their knowledge and showing us what years of patient ecosystem restoration can achieve.

What makes a healthy forest 🌳

On May 30th, we’re heading into the fragas atlánticas of Galicia to explore one of the region’s richest and most unique ecosystems together 🌿

During this hands-on workshop in Mañón, we’ll learn how to recognise native species, understand what ecosystem recovery looks like in practice, and explore how rewilding is already unfolding on the ground.

This is not a lecture room kind of workshop — we’ll be out in the forest, learning directly from the landscape itself.

Whether you’re curious about rewilding, forests, biodiversity, or simply want to reconnect with nature, you’re very welcome to join 🌱

📍 Mañón, Galicia
📅 30th May
🥪 Free to attend + snacks included

Last weekend our team in Galicia jumped back into the field together with a group of volunteers to carry out a baseline assessment of our plot.

After debarking the eucalyptus last year, we were excited to see how much life had already started returning. Instead of heavy eucalyptus regrowth, we found quite a few native plants, insects, and signs of ecosystem recovery.

Guided by Miguel , we spent the day exploring and documenting the species currently living on the site, creating our “Year Zero” baseline. Having this reference point means we’ll be able to track how the ecosystem changes and grows over time.

A huge thank you to Miguel for sharing his incredible knowledge of native plants and helping us better understand the landscape around us 🌱

If you’re curious what a healthy fraga looks like, then join us on the 30th of May for our next workshop in Mañón, you can find all the info via the link in our bio.

Over the past months, we’ve been carrying out community-led research in Galicia, supported by through the Bridging Movements project 🌿

Together, we explored one central question:

What are young people in rural Galicia actually experiencing and how can we build stronger connections and support around it?

took on the coordination and implementation of this project and has now written a deeply personal reflection on the process, the conversations, and what emerged from them.

From disappearing fireflies and flooded fields, to loneliness, communal land, and the search for belonging, the article explores how ecological and social crises are deeply connected, and what this could mean for building a stronger rewilding movement in Galicia.

“The future is rural. The future is communal.”
