⚠️ IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR HOMEOWNERS IN FRANCE

Heating, insulation & “€1 installation” offers ⬇️
There are legitimate government-backed schemes in France to support home energy improvements, including:
• MaPrimeRénov’ (state grants);
• CEE energy saving certificates (funded by energy suppliers):
• Eco-interest free loans (éco-prêt à taux zéro).
These schemes are designed to help residents improve energy efficiency in homes, including installations such as:
• pellet stoves and boilers;
• heat pumps;
• insulation work.

⚠️ WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD BE CAREFUL OF ⬇️
While these schemes are real, residents are strongly advised to be cautious of
“€1 installation” or “free heating system” claims, aggressive phone marketing or doorstep sales
pressure to sign quickly (“limited time offer”). Also watch out for unclear or hidden financing agreements, companies unwilling to provide full written quotations and subcontracted work with unclear responsibility.

Some homeowners have reported situations where:
• financial agreements were not fully understood at the time of signing;
• loans or repayments were involved that were not clearly explained;
• installation quality did not meet expectations.

✔️ SIMPLE SAFETY CHECKLIST
Before agreeing to any work:
✅ Always obtain multiple written quotes;
✅ Check the company has RGE certification (required for most subsidies);
❌ Never sign under pressure or urgency;
✅ Make sure you fully understand any loan or financing agreement;
✅ Ask for clear written breakdowns of subsidies vs actual cost.

🧭 PURPOSE OF THIS INFORMATION ⬇️
This is not about discouraging home improvements.
It is about helping people:
• avoid confusion;
• reduce financial risk;
and
• make informed decisions.

Awareness protects people - especially those living alone, unfamiliar with the system, or new to France.

The joys of living in France. 🇫🇷 Listen to the sounds!

08/03/2026

Another very important topic - MENTAL HEALTH.

Some of us have witnessed endless cries of help from some people who have relocated to France for a new start but have begun to feel very alone. The language barrier can play a huge part for many, as to the deterioration of a person’s ability to cope in a foreign country, but there are also many other reasons as to why a person can begin to feel stuck.

To not know where to get the help they need, some will post on pages to ask for assistance, where some have had to even ask for food - and this tells us just how desperate some people can become.

However the good news is that there is plenty of help available and I will be sharing more information about this shortly!

This short video below contains some wise advice, folks, and try to also remember this:

“You are never alone because when kind people help others by offering helpful advice after having learned the lessons they have throughout their own personal experiences, these can help to lift others and help others to avoid plenty. Those with good morals are never isolated until they are not strong enough to speak out, and never do believe that those of us who do try to help are alone. 😉 In the wider picture, we only form genuine relationships with others who prove invaluable as far as growth for the better goes”.

For any who need to learn how to cope better while living in a foreign country, where the trials and tribulations are bringing you down, then look out for the information to come that could save you more than merely money - it could save your dream but more importantly your life.

Please find some strength in what is said below and try not to allow yourself to ever become a victim..

My inbox is always open for any who are feeling desperate and I have lots of information I can supply of resources to help you.

⚠️ Social Media Safety Tip – Who Is Watching Your Posts?
A small observation from many years of living in France.

If you’re reading a thread where someone offers genuine advice or a warning… and a few people jump in with dismissive or sarcastic comments, you may notice something else.
Those comments often attract a little group of enthusiastic “likes”.

Here’s a useful habit:
👉 Take a moment to look at the profiles of the people liking those comments.
Very often you’ll see the same pattern:
• No real bio
• Flashy cars or random images as cover photos
• Endless memes
…and here’s the funny part: within those endless memes, you’ll often find someone proudly displaying a meme about “just be respectful to people” - which is usually the most ironic thing on their entire profile, given how they behave online.
• Constant arguments in comment sections
• Very strong opinions, very little useful information
Of course not everyone like this is a problem.
But remember something important:
Social media is also used by people quietly gathering information.
For example:
• Who owns a second home
• Who needs work done
• Who has just moved to an area
• Who may be vulnerable or asking for help
When people ask questions online they often give away more than they realise:
• the village they live in
• that the house is a holiday home
• that they are away for long periods
• that they live in a rural property on its own

In small villages that information can be very easy for the wrong person to piece together.
People do drive around areas looking for empty homes.
Those living in rural properties or second homes can unfortunately be the most vulnerable.

So here’s a simple tip:
👀 If someone seems more interested in mocking warnings than discussing them sensibly, take note of who is applauding them.
And remember:
The block button exists for a reason!
Reducing the number of strangers watching your posts can help protect you when you’re asking for help or advice online.

This isn’t about complaining.
It comes from years of experience and from many people who unfortunately learned these lessons the hard way.

📌 In my next post I’ll show how to easily block profiles and control who can see your posts, for anyone who isn’t very confident with social media settings.
A few small steps can make a big difference to your safety online.

🔥 Do you have an insert fire or a log burner?
Are you happy with the installation?
Was it fitted by a qualified installer who is aware of the regulations?
If not, you are advised to have the installation checked carefully.

Out of interest to many, and of that I am sure, below is an example of a detailed report in English which relates to an insert fire that had been inspected recently.
To offer some history, this fire had been installed by a French chimney sweep, and had been accepted as being safe by a former owner. The new owner had been sensible enough, due to concerns, and sensibly had it inspected by a French professional installer.
The French chimney sweep has since been struck off - the reason remains to be unknown as yet. This was an interesting way to describe his omission from the register but was a term used by an official in Laval - this does not necessarily mean the reason was due to an earlier legal dispute. Currently there is a legal process taking place.

Fire Installation Verification Report – Non-Compliant Example.
Inspection carried out at the homeowner’s request.
Following the request, a visit was made to inspect the fire installation. The inspection confirmed that the installation is non-compliant with safety standards.

Below is a detailed explanation of the observed issues and associated risks:
1. Missing Air Supply.
Observation: The appliance lacks a dedicated source of fresh air for combustion.
⚠️ Effect / Risk: Without sufficient airflow, the fire cannot burn properly, which can cause incomplete combustion and the production of CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) — a colorless, odorless, and potentially lethal gas. Poor airflow also reduces appliance efficiency and may damage components.
2. Missing Hood Insulation.
Observation: The flue hood above the fire has no thermal insulation.
⚠️ Effect / Risk: Heat may transfer to nearby combustible materials, increasing the risk of fire. Lack of insulation can also affect smoke and gas flow, potentially causing backdrafts of smoke or carbon monoxide into living areas.
3. Non-Compliant Flue Connection. Diameter (125/150 mm)
Observation: The flue pipe connecting the appliance to the chimney does not meet required diameter standards.
⚠️ Effect / Risk: An incorrect diameter can result in poor ventilation, smoke spillage, and CARBON MONOXIDE accumulation. It can also compromise appliance performance and invalidate safety certifications.
4. Flue Length / Overhang Exceeds Limits (45 cm and 8 linear meters)
Observation: The horizontal and/or vertical lengths of the flue exceed recommended limits.
⚠️ Effect / Risk: Exceeding these limits can reduce the draft, preventing proper removal of smoke and gases. This may lead to smoke spillage, carbon monoxide buildup, and reduced appliance efficiency, creating significant health and fire hazards.
Conclusion ⬇️
All of the above anomalies render the installation unsafe for use. The primary risks include:
⚠️ Carbon monoxide poisoning due to incomplete combustion or blocked venting.
⚠️ Fire hazards from uninsulated components near combustible materials.
⚠️ Reduced appliance efficiency and potential malfunction.
✅ Recommendation: The installation must be corrected by a qualified professional before use. Until then, the appliance should not be operated, and the room should remain well-ventilated to minimize risk.

This new owner could have died and did end up in hospital as a result of Covid, which developed in to pneumonia during the winter due to limited heating not helping within a damp property.

Be smart.
Have your installation checked if you do feel concerned.

🎉🏠✨ COMING SOON: Ashes to Astonishment — Tales of Dodgy Deeds & Fairy‑Tale Fixes! ✨🏠🎉
Will the Ugly Sisters make an appearance? Wait and see… 👀💄
What part they’ll play in these disasters — and how far they go — will be revealed over time!

Hi, I’m Cinders, the Fixing Fairy 🧚‍♀️✨ — rising from the ashes like Cinderella herself, turning a home full of rogue work, bodges, and hidden defects into a place fit for a palace ball. 👠🏰

These Facebook videos share the issues I’ve uncovered within my own property — from flying shed roofs to dodgy showers and unsafe fires. But that’s not all! We’ll also be welcoming others who’ve had problems with rogue artisans and want to share their story, so we can all learn, laugh, and make safer choices together. 🤝💡

Meet the artisans you’ll wish you never met — and remember, many more characters may well appear from the Cinderella world and beyond… let’s see who turns up next! 🎭✨

💥 Jack of All Bodges
Can do everything… badly. 🔨😬
Signature disaster: Floors that slope in every direction and “creative fixes” that defy logic.

🔥 Carbon Claude
French fire hazard extraordinaire! ⚠️🔥
Signature disaster: Installed a fire, charged €60 to sweep the chimney even though it was new and hadn’t been used, and refused to confirm it was safe, leaving the homeowner at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Classic disappearing act: vanishes to avoid liability, ignoring follow-up requests.

🚿 Leaky Larry
Showers that shouldn’t exist, floors that are underwater, and pipework that would make any plumber weep. 💦🤯
Expect blocked drains, leaky connections, and professionals pointing out the obvious: “This is why it’s blocked!”
Classic vanishing act: disappears to another country, leaving the homeowner to clean up the mess. 🌍💨

🕵️‍♂️ Rogue Roger
Sly, smooth, and somehow still standing on your wonky roof. 🏠😏
Signature disaster: Roof repairs that defy physics… and sanity.

🩹 Patch‑Up Pete
If it’s broken, he’ll patch it… sort of. 🩹🛠️
Signature disaster: Temporary fixes that fail spectacularly within days.

🥄 Half‑Baked Hank
Great ideas… poorly executed. 🍳❌
Signature disaster: DIY “improvements” that create more work than they solve.

💸 Cash‑in Claude
Cheaper if cash… at the risk of your sanity. 💶😅
Signature disaster: Under‑the-table “deals” that leave you calling a professional to fix it properly.

🏚️ Rickety Roof (with Stan & Laurel Screw)
Wooden shed bases, shed construction, and plasterboard screws galore. 🪵🛠️
Signature disaster: In a moment worthy of the tornado scene in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz — where Dorothy’s house lifts off and spins — Rickety Roof’s shed took flight, leaving half the structure airborne and chaos behind. 🌪️✨
Assisted illegally on the black by Stan & Laurel Screw, a slapstick duo — one quiet, one apparently blind — all three couldn’t build a kit shed even with instructions and used the wrong screws everywhere.
Beware the Ugly Sisters: some have been discovered spreading defamation, sabotaging legitimate businesses, or trying to cover up bodged work.
Their full role in these disasters will be revealed over time!

💪 Narrator: Cinders, the Fixing Fairy
That’s me! 🧚‍♀️✨
Rising from the ashes like Cinderella, I guide homeowners to make better choices, stay safe, and navigate rogue artisans, sprinkling a little fairy dust and humor along the way. 😄
From shed disasters to fire hazards, I show you how to spot red flags and make informed decisions while keeping it lighthearted.

💡 Why these videos exist:
They’re fun, educational, and relatable.
I share stories from my own property, uncovering hidden defects and exposing rogue artisans.
Others who’ve had issues are welcome to contribute their experiences, so we can all learn together and stay safer in France.
Some situations are serious — but once the work is understood, it’s okay to laugh, learn, and move forward.
😂 Because living safely in France doesn’t have to be boring. Once the shock is over, the story can become hilarious — and a little laughter helps deal with the drama!

👑 And we’re still seeking Prince Charming!
Cinders, the Fixing Fairy, has handled rogue artisans, rogue sheds, and rogue showers… but now the search is on for Prince Charming — the one who truly makes the palace complete! Will we ever find him? Stay tuned!

🔔 Follow “Safer Living in France” to laugh, learn, and see homes transformed from ashes into palaces — maybe even meet Prince Charming — and share your own stories if you’ve faced dodgy work.

⚠️ Scam Alerts, Safety Tips… and the Usual Comment Section Comedy

I would like to introduce you to our new regular slot, where we will be offering examples of people using profiles who you may be wise to block. These two characters are showing signs of two I know of within the criminal fraternity here but their identity will be confirmed in a few days. I was continuing to be helpful. 😉

Why do some people in France support people who are working illegally or doing jobs they’re not qualified for?”
Because at first it feels like a bargain…
until the bargain turns into a disaster.
It usually goes like this:
“Don’t worry, he’s cheaper.”
“He says he’s done this loads of times.”
“My neighbour used him and it was fine.”
“He doesn’t bother with paperwork.”
And for a while everyone feels clever for saving a few euros.
Then suddenly:
the job goes wrong
the paperwork is fake
the tax office gets interested
the insurance refuses to pay
and the “cheap expert” disappears faster than a croissant at breakfast.
And that’s when people discover the most expensive thing in the world…
…a cheap unqualified professional.
So the real mystery isn’t why these people exist.
They exist because people keep hiring them.
If nobody paid them, they’d disappear overnight.
Funny how that works.
