❣️🌹😍 Thrilled with this intricate Toile de Jouy hanging and voodoo doll made with brought and found tiny treasures and sweetly given to the house by retreat guest, artist, activist and all round legend Anette Anette Hansen. The hanging echoes the Toile de Jouy wallpaper of her room and is embellished with all sorts of exquisite details and I like to think the doll reflects the free spirit of the chateau. Thank you, Anette, for contributing so much fun and sass to the final retreat of the year. ✨👏 This year’s writer in residence, Tess Davidson from Ireland, was chosen from over 60 strong candidates for her ability to notice the strange, revealing details of everyday life. Within two days of her fortnight with us, she fell off a chair while fixing a curtain, and was rushed to hospital. We thought it might be curtains for her short story. Thankfully, her concussion eased and she managed to write an observant, highly moving piece encompassing a volunteer’s stay at the chateau, Joan of Ark, mothers and daughters. As well as that, she produced a soundtrack for alana’s short film, posed for a portrait and danced the night away. Thank you, for being such a trouper!

🎶 This year’s musician in residence, Devon-born Sidney Fereday Fereday, was selected over a wide range of international talents for his original, experimental approach, and his performance on the Journees du Patrimoine weekend had us all captivated. Former philosophy major and cricket champ, Sid made the most of his time in Sacy’s studio and formed close friendships too - we were delighted to see him thrive and flourish. 🎥🎬🎞️📷 Alana Bassett, this year’s artist in residence, of the three selected from over 120 applicants, flew in from New York fresh out of art school and spent her fortnight depicting an eerie dolls’ house world through her photographs and short film, which had a full house for its hayloft screenings on the Journees du Patrimone. Tess and Sidney, the other artists in residence, featured, starred and provided the soundtrack in a collaboration that encapsulated what the residency is all about. 🚿 🏆 Anne-Laure Anne-Laure Lelièvre has done it again 👏! This time she took on a bathroom with torn, peeling wallpaper and paintwork which had long passed from attractive patina to grim squalor. The chatelaine was attached to the paper design though and so I asked reproduction companies if it was possible, but it was too far gone to copy. Removing it revealed a palimpsest of other papers down the decades, a lining of newspaper dating from 1901 - confusing as the brown paper has a 50s feel - and a daunting gap above the sink. Undeterred as ever, Anne-Laure persevered in removing the painstaking prep and as I knew she would, made it beautiful, having never wallpapered before. I mean, check out the light switch perfection (which have since polished up)! Those are sun spots on the first pic btw. There’s still the windows and some woodwork to paint, but the hard graft is done at last! Merci Anne-Laure ✨👏✨
