Nous avons découvert Romain sur les réseaux et nous guettons depuis la moindre publication de sa part. Des compositions mélangeant dessin d’illustration et photographie, un doux mélanges, parfois espiègle, parfois piquant et très (très) souvent hilarant.

Rivel Rencontres Photographiques (RRP): Peux-tu te présenter en quelques lignes ?
Romain Joly: Je m’appelle Romain Joly. J’ai 34 ans et habite à Avignon.
Jai recommencé à dessiner il y a environ une quinzaine d’années, pendant mes études de géographie à l’Université. Je me suis d’abord tourné vers le dessin de presse puis vers les détournements d’objets à partir de 2020.
RRP: Peux-tu nous présenter en quelques mots ta démarche créatrice ?
Romain Joly: Ma démarche consiste à détourner des objets du quotidien grâce au dessin de sorte à ce qu’un presse-agrumes devienne un sombrero ou qu’un fenouil soit transformé en cornemuse.
Mes dessins font souvent référence aux animaux, à des personnalités publiques, à la pop culture, à des marques… Je n’ai pas vraiment de thème de prédilection, c’est assez varié.
J’adapte ma technique à chaque nouveau dessin. Crayons de couleurs ? Aquarelle ? Pastels ?… C’est toujours au feeling.
Il y a cependant à chaque fois un triple objectif : faire un beau dessin, qui traduit une idée originale et qui fasse rire ou sourire.
Je pars aussi du principe que moins je dessine, mieux c’est, car beaucoup dessiner reviendrait à “compenser” une mauvaise idée selon moi. Idéalement, l’objet devrait se suffire à lui-même.
RRP: Tes œuvres intègrent systématiquement de la photo, comment es-tu tombé dans la photo? Quel a été le déclencheur?
Romain Joly: La pratique de la photo s’est imposée d’elle-même car sans photo, pas de possibilité de montrer mes dessins. La photo est, dans mon cas, une pratique de nécessité.
Mes compétences en photographie sont d’ailleurs assez limitées. J’essaie de faire les photos les plus nettes possibles, avec une bonne lumière, tout en faisant attention à la direction des ombres portées des objets que j’utilise.
RRP: Alors? Illustrateur ou photographe?
Romain Joly: Illustrateur, sans aucune hésitation.
Parfois, je me dis même que je suis peut-être plus trouveur d’idées qu’illustrateur. En effet, je pense que ma force est de voir des similitudes autour de moi, qui peuvent paraître évidentes après-coup, mais que les autres ne voient pas forcément.
Mon travail pourrait se résumer à ça : faire le lien entre des choses qui, a priori, n’ont rien à voir ensemble. Qu’est-ce qu’un dé ? Un volume blanc avec des tâches noires. A quoi peut-on penser quand on imagine un volume blanc avec des tâches noires ? Une vache.
Une fois le lien fait, la suite de la démarche consiste à voir s’il est possible de faire un dessin qui fonctionne, à partir de cette idée.
Au final, le dessin n’est qu’un moyen pour moi de mettre en images mes idées.
RRP: Peux-tu nous parler d’une de tes productions en particulier ?
Romain Joly: En général, quand j’ai mon idée et mon objet, je dessine sur une feuille, pose mon objet sur la feuille, et prend le tout en photo. Mais il peut arriver aussi que je pose l’objet sur la feuille, prenne en photo cet objet, puis que je dessine par-dessus la photo avec de mon Ipad. C’est le cas du dessin du dromadaire et de la madeleine.
Ce weekend-là je n’avais pas d’idée très intéressante. Le samedi après-midi, à l’épicerie et au moment de payer, j’ai vu des madeleines à côté de la caisse. J’ai tout de suite eu une idée. La couleur orangée et la bosse typique de la madeleine m’ont instantanément fait penser à un dromadaire.
De retour à la maison, j’ai testé mon idée. Au final, je suis très content du résultat.
RRP: Peux-tu nous partager les éléments de ton actualité (expo à venir, projet, livre, travaux en cours)?
Romain Joly: Pour les travaux en cours, il y a d’abord les détournements que je publie chaque semaine (ou presque) sur mes réseaux.
En novembre 2026, j’exposerai d’ailleurs à la Médiathèque de Sorgues (84). Un atelier avec des enfants sera aussi organisé pour stimuler leur imagination grâce au dessin et aux détournements.
Fin juin 2026, je serai aux 10 ans du festival « A Morières de rire » à Morières-lès-Avignon (84). J’y dessinerai en direct aux côtés d’autres dessinateurs d’humour. Ce sera l’occasion pour moi de revenir au dessin plus « classique ».
Enfin, ayant désormais un certain nombre de dessins à mon actif, il y a bien sûr le projet d’un livre auquel je pense de plus en plus. Je ne sais pas encore quand ni comment il sera publié, mais cela finira par se faire.

Romain Joly: Il y a évidemment pleins d’artistes, de tous horizons, qui m’inspirent. Je vais en citer quelques-uns.
Je suis fan de Jean Jullien. J’aime son univers coloré, son trait approximatif et son style minimaliste. Je suis également sensible à la poésie et aux dessins grandioses de Jean-Jacques Sempé. L’humour des dessinateurs de presse Thibaut Soulcié et Frédéric Deligne me plaisent aussi beaucoup. En photographie, je suis très intéressé par le travail de Sarah Illenberger.

Rivel Rencontres Photographiques(RRP): Can you introduce yourself briefly?
Romain Joly: My name is Romain Joly. I'm 34 years old and live in Avignon.
I started drawing again about fifteen years ago, during my geography studies at university. I initially focused on editorial cartooning, then moved on to repurposing everyday objects starting in 2020.
RRP: Can you briefly describe your creative process?
Romain Joly: My process involves repurposing everyday objects through drawing, so that a citrus juicer becomes a sombrero or a fennel bulb is transformed into a bagpipe.
My drawings often reference animals, public figures, pop culture, brands… I don't really have a favorite theme; it's quite varied.
I adapt my technique for each new drawing. Colored pencils? Watercolors? Pastels?… It's always based on feeling.
However, there's always a threefold objective: to create a beautiful drawing that conveys an original idea and makes people laugh or smile. I also believe that the less I draw, the better, because drawing a lot would, in my opinion, be a way of "compensating" for a bad idea. Ideally, the object should stand on its own.
RRP: Your works systematically incorporate photography. How did you get into photography? What was the trigger?
Romain Joly: Photography became a natural part of my practice because without photos, there's no way to show my drawings. For me, photography is a necessity.
My photography skills are actually quite limited. I try to take the sharpest photos possible, with good lighting, while paying attention to the direction of the shadows cast by the objects I use.
RRP: So? Illustrator or photographer?
Romain Joly: Illustrator, without a doubt.
Sometimes, I even think I'm perhaps more of an idea generator than an illustrator. Indeed, I think my strength lies in seeing similarities around me, which may seem obvious in retrospect, but which others don't necessarily see.
My work could be summed up as this: making connections between things that, at first glance, have nothing to do with each other. What is a die? A white volume with black spots. What might you think of when you imagine a white volume with black spots? A cow.
Once the connection is made, the next step is to see if it's possible to create a drawing that works, based on this idea.
Ultimately, drawing is just a way for me to visualize my ideas.
RRP: Can you tell us about one of your works in particular?
Romain Joly: Generally, when I have my idea and my object, I draw it on a sheet of paper, place my object on the paper, and take a picture of the whole thing. But sometimes I also place the object on the paper, take a picture of it, and then draw over the photo with my iPad. That's what happened with the drawing of the camel and the madeleine.
That weekend, I didn't have any particularly interesting ideas. On Saturday afternoon, at the grocery store, when I was paying, I saw some madeleines next to the register. I immediately had an idea. The orange color and the typical hump of the madeleine instantly made me think of a camel.
Back home, I tested my idea. In the end, I'm very happy with the result.
RRP: Can you share some of your current projects with us (upcoming exhibitions, projects, books, works in progress)?
Romain Joly: As for works in progress, there are the parodies that I post every week (or almost) on my social media. In November 2026, I will be exhibiting at the Sorgues Media Library (84). A workshop with children will also be organized to stimulate their imagination through drawing and creative reinterpretations.
At the end of June 2026, I will be at the 10th anniversary of the "A Morières de rire" festival in Morières-lès-Avignon (84). I will be drawing live there alongside other cartoonists. This will be an opportunity for me to return to more "traditional" drawing.
Finally, having now created a number of drawings, there is, of course, the project of a book that I am increasingly considering. I don't know yet when or how it will be published, but it will happen eventually.

RRP: In the world of drawing or photography, can you share some names of artists who inspire you?
Romain Joly: There are obviously many artists, from all backgrounds, who inspire me. I'll mention a few.
I'm a fan of Jean Jullien. I love his colorful world, his rough lines, and his minimalist style. I'm also drawn to the poetry and grand drawings of Jean-Jacques Sempé. I also really enjoy the humor of press cartoonists Thibaut Soulcié and Frédéric Deligne. In photography, I'm very interested in the work of Sarah Illenberger.
