One Year in the Boat Yard!

We overcame Remy’s broken neck to push on with the build, grow an in-person and digital community, facilitate residencies, gain UN Ocean Decade Endorsement, support our members to cross Oceans…and much more!

Needless to say, we are proud at how far we’ve come and even happier to see the boat finally taking shape. Here’s to another great year ahead.

What happens when boats are left to decay on the seashore?

Across Brittany in France, abandoned boats are slowly breaking down—releasing fiberglass, paint and resin microparticles into the water, sediment, and ecosystems we depend on. Yet this issue remains largely invisible, under-researched, and under-discussed.

The project "Regenerative Tides: Sailing for Solutions" by the Floating Stories Lab Association is now aiming to change this. Endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade, this grassroots citizen science project engages coastal communities in mapping abandoned fiberglass boats, testing environmental samples, and co-designing advocacy tools.

Their recent workshop, organised with Cap Sizun - Pointe du Raz Community of Municipalities and University of Brighton, brought together leading researchers working at the forefront of marine pollution and local voices from the community to connect knowledge, lived experience, and future solutions.

We asked local community members their thoughts on the abandoned boats crisis during a recent workshop in Audierne. Most want change. Who should bear the brunt of the costs to get bad boats out of our coastal ecosystems and to dedicated dismantling centers?
Some harbour masters are taking action, but the system doesn’t enable a complete solution.
