MEET THE ARTIST FLAVIO GARCIANDÍA Flavio Garciandia

A defining figure in contemporary Cuban art, Flavio Garciandía has developed a visual language that moves between cultural identity, conceptual inquiry and the reinterpretation of modernist traditions.

Emerging from Cuba’s vibrant art scene of the late 1970s and 1980s, he became a co-founder of the Havana Biennial in 1984.

His paintings bring together diverse artistic languages, from Cubism and abstraction to Conceptual Art and Abstract Expressionism, transforming these references into vivid compositions that reflect the complexity and plurality of Cuban culture.

Through this interplay of influences, Garciandía questions the boundaries between artistic traditions, cultural belonging and the construction of meaning.
He refers to his distinctive approach as “New Tropical Abstraction” , an ironic and conceptually charged expression that brings together tropical sensibilities, visual experimentation and a critical engagement with the history of art.

Espace Brownstone, in collaboration with Galerie Mai 36, is pleased to announce Breton at the Frontier, Flavio Garciandía’s first solo exhibition in Paris. Bringing together works spanning the past three decades, the exhibition highlights the practice of one of Cuba’s most influential living artists and a key figure in the development of Latin American conceptual painting.

The exhibition takes its title from one of Garciandía’s recurring strategies: inventing titles around events that never actually happened. Over the years, his works have imagined encounters and gestures involving figures such as Brice Marden, Barnett Newman, John Baldessari and Yves Klein. Drawing on Marcel Duchamp’s idea of the title as an essential component of the artwork, Garciandía uses these fictional narratives to create an ironic space between Latin American culture and the history of Western art.

A central figure of the Cuban avant-garde of the 1980s, Garciandía belonged to a generation seeking alternatives to socialist realism and developing a critical position towards dominant Western artistic models. His practice emerged from that tension, turning cultural references and art history into material for irony and reinterpretation.

We’re pleased to share a selection of works by Peruvian artist Katherine Fiedler , currently on view at Art-o-rama Marseille with mueve galerie.

Some of these works were made during Katherine’s residency at our space in Paris, making this presentation particularly meaningful to us.

As part of an interview about the works presented at the fair, Katherine explains:

“ For Art-o-rama, I’m presenting a series of works that grew out of my research around the Bièvre. The works are built around a tension that emerges through materiality and form, between what we can glimpse and what remains hidden.

Materials such as metal, leather, pipes, mesh and fittings—connected to the history of the Bièvre—come together with vegetal forms and elements such as rain and the river.

The works are constructed through systems of tension, suspension and momentary balance, leaving the assemblages, anchors and points of support visible, where each element is structurally dependent on the others. I’m interested in the possibility of thinking about what appears unstable or fragile as a form of resistance to models of production historically associated with control, hardness and permanence.”

[Meet Our Artist in Residence]

For the second consecutive summer, Association NOEMI-Espace Brownstone is welcoming an artist for a two-month summer residency in our space! This year, we are delighted to host Peruvian artist Katherinne Fiedler , based in France. Fiedler is the recipient of the Culture Moves Europe grant from the Goethe-Institut (2026) and has been selected for the 2–12 Residency Program at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris. During her time with us, Katherinne has been developing and preparing new work ahead of her upcoming presentation at Art-O-Rama in Marseille, where she will be represented by the Peruvian gallery mueve Galería. mueve.galeria

Katherinne Fiedler
(Lima, Peru, 1982)

Katherinne Fiedler is a Peruvian artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, installation, video, photography, and painting. Her work investigates the relationships of interdependence that emerge within a territory and their social, political, ecological, and affective dimensions.

Through the symbolic, physical, and semantic qualities of landscape materials, she explores how they connect the intimate with the political, and desire with vulnerability, revealing the relationships that shape bodies, landscapes, and ecosystems.

Fiedler holds a BFA in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona (2007). She is the recipient of the Culture Moves Europe grant from the Goethe-Institut (2026), the Leonardo Grant for Creators and Researchers from the BBVA Foundation (2023), the Ayudas a la Circulación de las Artes from the Ministry of Culture of Peru (2025), and the CIFO Emerging Artist Fellowship (2017), among other awards.

She has participated in numerous international residencies, including Cité internationale des arts (Paris, 2026–27), BilbaoArte (Bilbao, 2023–24), Hawapi (Peru, 2019), Utopiana (Geneva, supported by Pro Helvetia South America, 2019), Casa de Velázquez (Madrid, 2018), LARA (Panama, 2017), and FLORA ars+natura (Bogotá, 2016).

We look back in images at our most recent institutional collaboration.

On Thursday, May 21st, we inaugurated “Ese Puerto Existe” at our space, an institutional exhibition by Peruvian artist Fabiola González , organized by the Bachelor in Art Management Year 1 students at IESA Arts & Culture .arts.culture , under the original initiave of Grecia Cáceres , Head of the Latin America Department at the same institution.

The opening was attended by the Ambassador of Peru to France , Stephen Haas Del Carpio, alongside Gilbert Brownstone, president of Association NOEMI- Espace Brownstone .

Many thanks to all the students .arts.culture and staff who made this project possible, and especially to Fabiola González.
