Florida Green Schools PTSA wins the Accountable Impact Sustainable Development Goals Challenge. We got featured in the USGBC publication. https://www.usgbc.org/articles/sdg-challenge-miami-addresses-food-waste-single-use-plastics Special shout out to our VP for South Florida, Emily Guerra for mentoring the students and promoting the win. Our team will go to the United Nations in the fall to share our project! Our winning proposal is a student-driven program that connects trained college volunteers with K–12 school cafeterias to reduce food waste, implement composting strategies, and eliminate single-use plastics in school cafeterias. It includes a structured training program, weekly shifts, tracking tools, and a Zero Waste Ceremony to reflect on impact and growth.

We've been super busy: lobbying for better laws for food recovery, mentoring students on how to talk to lawmakers about their experience in school cafeterias, hosting workshop on how to recover food and food scraps, and building out our networks to bring college students to volunteer in schools!

Even though this bill did not get out of committee this year, it served as a rationale for a local school board resolution in Miami-Dade County Public Schools that is co-sponsored by 7 other members. "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are" -- Teddy Roosevelt (The National Park president).

SB 1464 allows schools to partner with local food banks and take other steps to reduce waste.
