Meet Jupiter's mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre! 💫

Praised by the New York Times for bringing 'life and beauty to everything she touched', Lea Desandre's achievements also include being awarded Singer of the Year at the Opus Klassik 2022.

She has performed across the world with critically acclaimed orchestras and ensembles and has been a part of many successful opera productions, performing roles ranging from Baroque to contemporary.

Among the highlights of recent years, she distinguished herself in the title role of Médée (Charpentier) at the Palais Garnier and made her mark internationally with the role of Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart), which she has performed in seven different productions since her debut in 2021: Aix-en-Provence Festival, Paris National Opera, Liceu in Barcelona, Zurich Opera House, Lausanne Opera, Ravenna Opera and Salzburg Festival.

She has been part of Jupiter since the beginning, and sings in the titular role of Handel's "Theodora", along with many of our different programmes as a core soloist, as well as paying tribute to Julie Andrews as the star of our "Chasing Rainbows" programme.

We asked Lea what being in Jupiter means to her. 🎵

✨ Theodora Sunday — Episode XVI: “Queen of summer” ✨🍷🌸👑

The second act opens in a world of celebration.

The Romans are gathered for a great public feast, getting ready to honor Jove with ceremony, wine, and song. Everything feels abundant, festive, and full of sensual pleasure. 🍷✨

They invoke Flora, the queen of summer, and the goddess of love, while raising their voices for Caesar, king of men. It is a moment of splendour, beauty, and power, where pleasure and politics come together in one dazzling scene. 🌸👑

But after everything we have just lived through with Theodora, Irene, and Didymus, this celebration feels almost unsettling too. The joy is real, but so is the decadence. And that contrast makes the scene all the more striking. ⚔️

« Ye men of Antioch, with solemn pomp
Renew the grateful sacrifice to Jove!
And while your songs ascend the vaulted skies,
Pour on the smoking altar floods of wine,
In honour of the smiling deities,
Fair Flora, and the Cyprian queen.

Queen of summer, queen of love,
And thou cloud-compelling Jove:
Grant a long and happy reign
To great Caesar, king of men! »

A brilliant, glittering opening to Act II, where the Roman world is once again on full display in all its beauty, excess, and power. ✨

✨ Theodora Sunday — Episode XIII: “Angels ever bright and fair” ✨⚔️🕊️

After Septimius arrives, everything suddenly becomes very real.

Theodora remains calm, grounded in her faith. For her, praying is not rebellion, it is simply a truth she cannot deny, even if it means death. 🤍

But what he announces is worse than death, a fate that would take away her dignity and everything she holds sacred.

In that moment, everything becomes still. 🌙

She does not resist, she turns inward, toward something higher, with a quiet strength that feels almost beyond the situation itself.

She calls for the angels, not out of fear, but with deep trust, as if she already belongs somewhere else. 🕊️✨

« Deluded mortal! call it not rebellion,
To worship God; it is His dread command,
His, whom we cannot, dare not disobey,
Though death be our reward.

Death is not yet thy doom,
But worse than death to such a virtuous mind!
Lady, these guards are order’d to convey you
To the vile place, a pr******te, to devote your charms.

Oh worse than death indeed! Lead me, ye guards,
Lead me, or to the rack, or to the flames,
I’ll thank your gracious mercy!
Angels, ever bright and fair,
Take, oh take me to your care!
Speed to your own courts my flight,
Clad in robes of virgins white,
Take me,
Angels….. »

There is something deeply peaceful in this moment, as if her faith is already protecting her and carrying her beyond it. 🤍🕊️
