Yesterday, as part of the National Architecture Days Journées de l'architecture, we celebrated more than the tangible heritage of Atelier 11 : its 150 years of hosting artists, fostering craftsmanship, and nurturing creative exchanges that bring this historic place to life.

October 17 marks the International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage, proclaimed by UNESCO to celebrate what is also known as living heritage — the practices, knowledge, and expressions that shape our everyday lives and reflect the richness of our cultural diversity.

We were thrilled to celebrate this living heritage alongside our current artists in residence, Vanessa Brown and Irene Calderón Irene Calderón. Together with our visitors, we reflected on Atelier 11’s legacy through the work of its 20th-century residents, sculptors Oscar Miestchaninoff and Jacques Lipchitz, whose shared artistic journey connected La Cité Falguière with the house-studio they designed with Le Corbusier Fondation Le Corbusier. Their story offers a powerful reflection on how architecture can preserve not only physical spaces, but also the community spirit, creative exchanges, and values they embody.

As we develop the restoration project for Atelier 11, L’AiR Arts continues to explore the artist’s studio through the lens of architecture, asking how we can build the future from a shared heritage.

For this year’s National Architecture Days, we turn our attention to the 20th-century sculptors Oscar Miestchaninoff and Jacques Lipchitz, whose shared artistic journey connects Atelier 11 in Montparnasse with their house-studio in Boulogne-Billancourt, designed by Le Corbusier Fondation Le Corbusier

In alignment with this year’s theme, ‘Adaptive Reuse: Building the Future’, discover how the renovation of Atelier 11 adapts the space for the future while preserving Cité Falguière’s artistic legacy.

L’AiR Arts is thrilled to host Vanessa Brown for a month-long residency, supported by Kultur | lx - Arts Council Luxembourg

Originally from Canada and now based between Luxembourg and Belgium, Vanessa works in sculpture, video, and installation. Her practice involves transmitting her subjective experiences through specific materials, particularly those with rich histories such as metal and glass. Informed by research, her work reconsiders historical uses of these materials to create new unanticipated affiliations, thereby pushing the boundaries of their traditional uses.

Meet Irene Calderón! Irene Calderón

Rooted in her Costa Rican background and now based in Paris, Irene’s work weaves in elements of culture, landscape, and the quiet ambiguity of painting from a place seldom linked to oil traditions — turning questions of identity, belonging, and context into an integral part of her art.

Following our event for the National Artists Days, where Irene presented her work in dialogue with Vanessa Brown, we are pleased to offer another opportunity to discover the work of both of our current residents during the upcoming National Architecture Days, focusing on artists’ ateliers!

Meeting through stillness, Irene and Vanessa explore themes of symbolism and mythology in their work.

Join us this Saturday for the book launch with art historian and author Dr Louise Franklin to celebrate her new book, ‘Reframing Chaïm Soutine. The Life and International Legacy of a Parisian Painter’, published by Bloomsbury Publishing

​📕 In this first scholarly biography of Chaïm Soutine, in addition to presenting new archival and fieldwork findings, Dr Franklin interrogates and decisively dispels many of the persistent, popular but problematic biographical myths that have dogged the artist and limited interpretation of his works.

📍The launch will take place at Atelier 11 — our artist residency and one of Soutine’s former studios, which was the subject of at least two of his paintings.
