That’s a wrap on Day 2 of Momentum 2026!

Today at the Musée de la civilisation , our community dove headfirst into the core themes reshaping modern museum practices.

From a moving morning keynote on memory, conflict, and resilience, to bold explorations of emotion-driven museology, co-creation, and circular ecodesign, the sessions sparked crucial conversations on how institutions can balance low-footprint innovation with shared authority. We wrapped up the day going behind the scenes of the museum’s flagship exhibitions, leaving us with fresh tools and perspectives to build a museum world without compromise.

For 38 years, the Musée de la civilisation has been exploring new ways of doing things, putting people at the centre, questioning traditional museum practices, and making space for new voices and ideas.

Do Indigenous People Need Museums?
Indigenous nations and cultures exist independently of museums. So how can museums become platforms for Indigenous peoples to advance their own priorities? What opportunities do they offer, and what challenges remain?
We are pleased to welcome Heather George, Executive Director of the Woodland Cultural Centre (Canada); Dr. Jilda Andrews, Deputy Director, First Nations, at the National Museum of Australia; and Richard Kistabish, President of Minwashin (Canada), for this closing keynote.
Together, they will explore the role museums can play in supporting Indigenous priorities, and what it means to rethink these relationships.

Museums under Conflict: Memory, Dialogue, Response, Resilience
How can museums respond when conflict and disaster put collections, communities and cultural memory under extreme pressure?
Drawing on experiences from the Near and Middle East and Africa, this keynote will explore the challenges museums face in protecting collections while remaining connected to their communities and contributing to healing and resilience.
▶️We are pleased to welcome Nasir Al Darmaki, VP ICOM, ICOM UAE, and Golnaz Golsabahi, VP ICOM, ICOM Iran, who will join us online for this important conversation, moderated by Negar Sagharichi, Collections Specialist, Tavakoli Archives, University of Toronto.
The session will also invite us to reflect on what capacity-building, knowledge-sharing and solidarity across borders can mean for museums navigating crisis and its aftermath.

On October 7, conclude the ICOM Exhibitions Conference, on a high note with a discovery tour of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ).
🏛️Accompanied by their guides, participants will discover the museum complex as it continues to expand, where art, architecture and nature come together at a pivotal moment in its transformation.
Explore the Pierre Lassonde Pavilion and the national collection galleries dedicated to contemporary art, Inuit art, and decorative arts and design, then discover “Hyperréalisme. Ceci n’est pas un corps”, the museum’s major international exhibition of the moment.
🔜Enjoy privileged access to the Espace Riopelle– Michael Audain Pavilion, entirely dedicated to Jean Paul Riopelle and opening its doors on October 22. This is a unique opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at a venue set to become one of the major centers for modern art in Québec.
🪩The tour will be followed by the closing ceremony, a festive gathering offering breathtaking views of the museum district and its natural surroundings.
