Today, we celebrate IMC Honorary Member Oscar Peterson, one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time.

For more than five decades, the legendary Canadian pianist captivated audiences with his extraordinary virtuosity, effortless swing and unmistakable musical voice. Drawing inspiration from pioneers such as James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, Nat King Cole and Art Tatum, Peterson forged a style that was entirely his own.

Throughout his remarkable career, he shared the stage with many of jazz's most iconic artists—including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Stéphane Grappelli—leaving an enduring mark on the history of jazz and inspiring generations of musicians around the world.

IMC Honorary Members are distinguished professionals, educators, performers and composers who have made exceptional contributions to the International Music Council and its mission.

The recent sentencing of Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi is a stark reminder that, across history and still today, musicians, composers and poets continue to face censorship, intimidation and persecution simply for expressing themselves.

In support of the message of the National Music Council of the United States, IMC reaffirms its commitment to defending the and standing for the of artistic expression. Protecting musical artists and creators from repression is essential to building open, inclusive and democratic societies.
