AARO has identified concerns with the removal of an option from the forms for U.S. citizens who were born abroad and have never lived in the United States, as well as changes to the identification section of the forms. These changes will create confusion for overseas voters – deterring some from voting, and will also impose additional burdens and risk on election officials. Public comments to these changes are now being accepted through the Federal Register until 11:59 p.m. EST on November 9.

A few events from this past week. First, Kristi Lorin represented AARO at the American Embassy Service Fair on October 1st. It gave us an opportunity to connect with people working at the Embassy and other American associations. There were a lot of questions about voting as well. Next, we had an interesting crowd with lots of interaction at the recent Meetup lunch. Karine L. came to energize the voters and answer any last minute questions. The federal government has just recently made a series of changes affecting how Americans abroad register and vote. Federal voting forms have been changed without the public comment process, key information is not available from government websites, and other government websites now contain instructions that could confuse or discourage eligible overseas voters.
