The International Astronomical Union

The International Astronomical Union Our mission is to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy through international cooperation. Of those 73 are National Members.

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) was founded in 1919. Its individual members — structured in Divisions, Commissions, and Working groups — are professional astronomers from all over the world, at the PhD level and beyond, and active in professional research and education in astronomy. The IAU has 10593 Individual Members in 94 countries worldwide. In addition, the IAU collaborates with va

rious scientific organizations all over the world. House Rules
Welcome to the official page for the International Astronomical Union (IAU), where you will find the latest information about the IAU, its activities and more! Thank you for choosing to be a part of our community! We have some “house rules” so that you always know how we can help you and what you can expect from us. If you have any questions, we are available through private messages. Write us a message and you will receive a response within five working days. We will answer questions regarding our activities. Unfortunately, we are not able to answer general questions about astronomy and other topics not directly related to our activities. If you want to send us an image, link or any other material, please send it in a private message. The option to post directly on our timeline is not enabled. We receive many requests, and unfortunately we are not able to share/advertise/promote all of them. As we want to give everyone equal and fair treatment, we have decided not to promote pages, initiatives or other projects with no direct connection to the IAU. If you want to add a comment to a post, please engage in a dialogue based on respect and understanding. We want you to have a useful and pleasant experience on our page, so to ensure that you will enjoy being here, but also to protect you, we will do the best we can to remove from our page the following types of behaviour:

-Obscene, offensive or inappropriate, whether in the form of text, image, link redirecting to an external page, audio or video, whether sent via private message or publicly posted on the page;

-Intimidating and demeaning to another person;
discriminatory (related to age, s*x, race or any other basis);

-Defamatory and/or having a negative impact on the image of the IAU, its partners or members of our community;

-Ambiguous, giving the impression that it provides information on behalf of the IAU, but without our consent;

-Wrong, which can harm the IAU’s reputation and that of its partners; the IAU does not encourage false and/or biased statements;

-Advertising or seeking personal gain or profit;

-Illegal or violations of copyright or other intellectual property rights;

-Libellous, that may harm privacy;

-Illegal, that encourages illegal activities;

-Spamming, containing viruses or other software designed to cause damage to other users or to the official IAU page;

-Outside the topics for discussion shared on our page. We take no responsibility for the content posted by other users on this page and we reserve the right to ban an author for not respecting the house rules, and to delete their messages. We are pleased to announce free, online participation for the Kavli-IAU Global Coordination Workshop (GCW) from 22-26 June 2026.

The workshop, "International Coordination of the Time - Domain and Multi-Messenger Sky: New Opportunities and New Challenges", builds on the highly successful Kavli-IAU Global Coordination Workshop series. It will bring together astronomers and astrophysicists from around the world to discuss the global considerations of time-domain astronomy and multimessenger astrophysics. The drivers for these areas over the next decade will be large, international projects which require prompt and coordinated follow-up of new astronomical discoveries that may disappear in just a few days, or even sooner.

Supported by The Kavli Foundation, German Centre for Astrophysics, Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt

Not one, but two of the recipients of the 2026 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics are IAU members.

The IAU congratulates Vasily Belokurov, Amina Helmi and Rodrigo Ibata “for uncovering the fossil evidence of past mergers proving that the Milky Way galaxy was built through hierarchical accretion.” Their foundational work confirmed that the Milky Way has grown over billions of years by merging with and consuming matter from surrounding galaxies.

The Kavli Prize recognizes scientists whose discoveries change the way we understand the universe, matter, and the brain. We are proud to see IAU members Amina Helmi and Rodrigo Ibata recognised among this year’s laureates for the lasting impact their work has left on the field of astrophysics.

Apply for the next IAU Hands-On Workshops (I-HOW) by June 30.

Vast amounts of astronomical data are currently available in archives scattered around the world. The IAU Hands-On Workshops (I-HOW) trains young scientists in developing countries in accessing, analysing and using this data for research projects.

Next I-HOW: Local Volume Cosmology Constraints on Dark Matter Properties in the Era of GAIA, LSST and S4 Probes
19 - 30 October 2026,
La Plata, Argentina

There is no registration fee to participate in the workshop.

Moving from Academia to Industry - Strategies and Skills

The IAUJuniorMember invite you to their next Early Career Astronomer (ECA) Online Discourse Series #32 with Dr. Mariangela Bonavita.

Date: 4 June 2026
Time: 13:30 am UTC

Given that academia can hire fewer than 10% of PhD graduates, transitioning to industry is a step many PhD students need to take at some point. Moving from academia to industry is more than a career change; it is a fundamental translation of value. While the university setting prioritizes exhaustive inquiry and individual expertise, the corporate world thrives on speed, scalability, and measurable impact. Making a smooth transition requires shifting your mindset from "what I know" to "how I solve problems," effectively repackaging your specialized research into actionable business strategies. By aligning your technical rigor with commercial goals, you transform from a subject matter expert into a strategic asset capable of driving innovation in a fast-paced environment.
