Fondation René Touraine - International Foundation for Dermatology The Fondation René Touraine is an International non-governmental, non-profit organization, founded in 1991.

To improve access to quality health care for patients suffering from skin diseases all over the world, the Fondation René Touraine supports continuing medical education in dermatology and fosters clinical and therapeutic research. 🔬 Meet the sixth member of our SPIN spotlight: Prof. Stefano Piaserico, MD, PhD

This week we introduce Prof. Stefano Piaserico, Associate Professor of Dermatology at the Università degli Studi di Padova, in Italy, where he heads the Regional Centre for Psoriasis.

His work focuses on psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, and on the comorbidities that come with them. He also looks closely at patients whose immune system is under pressure, especially organ transplant recipients, and at the skin cancers they face. Clinic and research go hand in hand in everything he does.

A few things worth knowing about him:

🏥 He leads the Regional Centre for Psoriasis in Padua, a reference point for patients across the region.

💡 His PhD in Biochemistry and Biophysics explored photodynamic therapy in dermatology, a field he still brings into his research today.

📚 He has authored more than 230 publications, in journals such as the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the British Journal of Dermatology, Circulation and the JEADV.

📝 He serves as associate editor or editorial board member for Frontiers in Medicine, Acta Dermato-Venereologica and the Italian Journal of Dermatology.

🌍 He is a Councilor of the International Psoriasis Council and a member of for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis - GRAPPA, the international research group on psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Shining a light on AMALYSTE 🤝

AMALYSTE is the French association for people affected by Stevens-Johnson syndrome and Lyell syndrome (TEN). These rare and severe skin reactions are most often triggered by medication.

Founded in 1999, the association has supported several hundred patients and families. It is approved by the French Ministry of Health and sits on the board of France Assos Santé, the national network of patient organisations.

Its work covers many fronts. Online peer support meetings, the “Cafés AMALYSTE”, led by trained patient partners. Practical guidance on care pathways, eye care and administrative steps, strong advocacy with health authorities.

🔬 Meet the fifth member of our SPIN spotlight: Adj. A/Prof. Hazel Oon, MD

This week we introduce Adj. A/Prof. Hazel Oon, Senior Consultant Dermatologist at the National Skin Centre in Singapore, where she heads the Psoriasis Unit and the Acne/HS Clinic.

Her work covers the chronic inflammatory diseases that patients often live with for years: psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, acne and rosacea. She also brings a strong interest in photodermatology and in the metabolic side of skin disease. For her, treating the skin means looking at the whole patient.

A few things worth knowing about her:

🌏 She is a Councilor of the International Psoriasis Council and South Asia coordinator for the Global Psoriasis Atlas, with a clear goal: better access to psoriasis care and research across Asia.

🧪 She is a principal investigator in Phase II and III trials on psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa and rosacea, and a researcher at the Skin Research Institute of Singapore (SRIS).

📋 She has authored guidelines on psoriasis, acne and rosacea.

🫀 She looks closely at metabolic comorbidities in dermatology, including steatotic liver disease.

🎓 She leads undergraduate dermatology teaching across Singapore's three medical schools and chairs the Chapter of Dermatologists in Singapore.

🤝 As Medical Advisor to the Psoriasis Association of Singapore, she keeps patients' voices close to her work.

🎬 SPIN Offs is back, this time on vitiligo!

For this new episode, we're turning the spotlight on vitiligo with one of the field's most recognised experts and a member of the SPIN Scientific Committee: Prof. Julien Seneschal.

Head of the Inflammatory & Auto-Immune Dermatology Unit at the University Hospital of Bordeaux (CHU de Bordeaux), Prof. Seneschal has long been a driving force in vitiligo research. Longtime followers of the Foundation will remember him well. Back in 2008, we funded his fellowship at Harvard, and he has been part of the SPIN adventure since 2020.

🏆 EADV Awards 2026: Scientific Achievement Award for Professor Christine Bodemer!

The Fondation René Touraine warmly congratulates its President, Professor Christine Bodemer. She received the Scientific Achievement Award from the EADV - European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology Congress in Vienna.

This award honours a career dedicated to dermatology, and above all to rare skin diseases. Former coordinator of the French FIMARAD FSMR network and the -Skin coordinator for ten years, Christine Bodemer has driven real progress in the care and research of these conditions, in France and across Europe.

An achievement like this is never a solo effort. It also recognises the work of the Department of Dermatology team at Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital. We share these congratulations with them. 👏

🤝 Spotlight on a patient association: AFRHAIDA (Hailey Darier)

Hailey-Hailey disease and Darier disease are rare genetic skin conditions. They cause painful lesions on the skin, and sometimes on mucous membranes, which can become infected. Their weight is felt at home, at school, at work and in social life. Yet many patients choose to keep their daily struggle to themselves.

A few things worth knowing about the association:

📅 AFRHAIDA was founded on 19 May 2015 by Aurore Bouleau, who still leads it today.

🤝 It was born with the help of the Association Pemphigus Pemphigoïde France. As more of its members turned out to live with Hailey-Hailey or Darier disease, a dedicated association became necessary to set these genetic conditions apart from autoimmune blistering diseases.

🩺 Its mission is threefold: inform and support patients and their families, raise awareness among doctors to avoid wrong or late diagnoses, and support medical research.

🙌 The association runs on volunteers who live with the disease and give their skills to the cause.

🔬 Meet the fourth member of our SPIN spotlight: Dr. Vimal Prajapati, MD, FRCPC

This week we introduce Dr. Vimal H. Prajapati, Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Calgary and co-founder of the Skin Health & Wellness Centre and the Dermatology Research Institute in Calgary, Canada.

His practice is fully dedicated to skin cancer and immune-mediated inflammatory skin diseases: atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, alopecia areata and vitiligo. He treats adults and children alike, and brings the same rigour to the clinic and to research.

A few things worth knowing about him:

🎓 He trained in dermatology at the University of Alberta, is board certified in both Canada and the United States, and completed a fellowship in pediatric dermatology at Harvard Medical School.

👶 He launched several dedicated clinics in Calgary, including multidisciplinary pediatric psoriasis and pediatric morphea clinics, as well as rapid access clinics for psoriasis and eczema.

🧪 He has taken part in 141 clinical trials, as an investigator or as a member of global data monitoring and steering committees.

📚 He has published 126 peer-reviewed papers and presented 211 abstracts at congresses around the world. This year, he co-authored a Canadian consensus on a treatment algorithm for alopecia areata in adolescents and adults.

🌍 He serves as a Councilor for both the International Eczema Council and the International Psoriasis Council.
